Removed? heck no! just downsized to be battleship equivalent or so.
Thus making the Carrier's advantage, the reason your faction shelled out more credits than half of Manhattan is worth, its fighter wing but not leaving it completely defenseless.
I can't think of a single sci-fi carrier ship that wasn't battleship equivalent or better with its own weapons...
I would think, if Carriers were to spawn NPC, that it shouldn't hurt the server much at all since people still take missions at peak times that also spawn extra NPC.
The only issue would be if someone carelessly scheduled an event for a peak time and all the cap whores spawned their NPCs too closely together. Then again, maybe people will use their brains and not schedule an event for peak server traffic time too.
would it not be possible to make npc fighters ammunition for a kind of missile launcher? you whould equip an npc launcher turret onto your carrier and stock up on npc ship ammo and fly off. then you could press fire and you would release an npc fighter. they could be more powerful depending on what class of turret it is (affecting the class of ammo you could buy) and different npc faction ammo could be sold by the according faction.

I've been thinking something along the lines of this. However, I don't think its possible.

Well, Niezck a long time ago used Fox Unit 01's mod to make wingmen for our battleships. I've now got the mod, and am talking to Fox about it. Once I figure out how it works (I think they force spawn NPC's) I'll try and make some for Discovery.
Bloody hell, Fox is a genius (The guy who made the mod in the first place). I'm going to attempt to edit it now.
