yes - it is possible but its also a lot of work. - we can circumvent the most common problems ( like logging playercarrier, carrier jumping to another system whith docked players, etc. ) - but whats left is still a lot of work.

you practicly have to create a hidden "base" in EVERY system of sirius ( which is quite a lot ) - so that this "base" functions as the carrier for docked players.

additionally to the work that would need to be done to mod the systems ( hundreds ) - it can also cause more lag due to a greater fluctuation of players ( in, out, kick / relocate etc. )

now - its not THAT much, cause we don t really have many dedicated carriers. - but once it is implemented, people would come and try to "justify" how nearly every ship is a carrier of sorts ( usually they d only argue for the ships they care about of course )

another point is balance. - when a carrier is a base, even a base without repair facility or vendor. - it provides a great tactical advantage. - one might say "that is exactly what we WANT" - until you are on the other side.

even now, we have monthly threads about unfairness ( and its amazing how unfairness shifts... as the sides of combat switch )

so - right now, i d consider it like that: - not everything that makes sense and is possible also has a beneficial effect on the game.

its like battlecruisers. - one side has them, the other side doesn t have them. - one after another, they pop up. - right now, the only real carriers are the order carrier, the liberty carrier and the zoner carrier. - ALL of those ships are highly restricted. - three ships offering tremendous tactical advantage vs. factions that do not have these options.

i think this would be good but i think about 20 people are already trying to do that. The devs already know and the mod is 8* ***k.

Aren't there other carriers? By infocards and looks, there are more to my knowledge.
The Zephyr comes to mind first of course, then you have the liberty carrier thingy(?), and I don't know which others I might be missing.

yes - there are heaps of carriers..... actually every battleship in the game is practicly a carrier. - and if every battleship ( sometimes even cruisers ) are carriers.... we DO get a lot of fluctuation of players.

if it was tested - i d rather only want two carriers ( liberty / order ) to employ that feature. - and only if it worked perfectly and without balance issues - extend it to all others.

Will be nice to make all carriers do that but not battleships. That would be imba.
Plus I'm an independent bship owner (or will be soon, currently cruiser) and don;t want to have everyone asking me for a ride.

eghhh, even if it is possible, what do you use player dockable ships for?
try this right now, dock with a battleship base, any vanilla battleship. now sit there for 15 minutes..... having a load of fun?

now, if we had dockable player carriers, this is what would happen except you'd exit into another system. funnily enough though, all ships in freelancer cruise at a similar speed, so you could have done it yourself just as easily.

if you can repair on player carriers, you get 4 hour fights, with people buying more bots/batts and feeding them back to the carrier till everyone gets tired or has to go to work.

and if you just log in when you get skyped that your carrier is under attack, you quickly start to have a ganking problem when everyone on board launches.

while a very RP idea, i just cant find any pro's to it other then docking dialog with sexual innuendo about entering them.

if people want to fly around with another players bigger ship so much, why not join formation and be an escort?

A couple ideas:

If the docking ship dies, all ships docked inside also get destroyed, and the players are moved to the base they were docked on B4 they had docked on the player ship. This can be done with a Stack data structure, and you just keep pushing the new base to the stack. The stack resets when the player doks on NPC base, and the bottom of the stack is the last NPC base that the player docked on.

For logging out: the docking ship that logs out stays in space (similar to F1), except only until all players have undocked from it. Once it is empty, it undergoes the F1 procedure. Players cannot dock with the ship during this procedure. Also, if the carrying vessel docks on a base and then logs out, the players who were docked with the vessel wil be kicked, and when they log back on they will be docked with the base that the carrier docked on. Of course, to avoid confusion, perhaps, after the carrier has logged out in space, its name can gain an additional character in its tag to indicate that the ship has logged out.

Again, I'm not sure how doable all this is, but I thought it up just now and it seems sound.

So is it likely this feature will be in the next version?

likely? no

but dockable playerships is always in the "back of our minds" but there are more pressing issues to be addressed before ( sometimes small ones that are hardly visible - but still important )
