Like many people said, skype is mainly used to pass on all kinds of information by factions to its members. You think someone is going to send you a pm on forums just to tell you everything that has been discussed on skype (eg. changes in factions goals), just because you dont want to get it out of a principle? Well no, they wont. I personally know of examples where a faction member didnt have skype and he did all kinds of stupid things ingame for the sole reason of "lack of info".
There are some factions that dont require skype (I think), but for those that do require it; if you arent ready to fulfill that simple task of getting skype just because you have different points of view (or just cuz you're stubborn), maybe you shouldnt apply for it at all eh?
Skype does actually suck. If your in a a group chat it will lag, you'll get bombarded with messages and every once in awhile it will probably drop out all together.
But if you want to talk to the friends you make here, its does the job. If you don't want to talk to them, then don't get it.

I agree - in fact I do have Skype - so I can communicate with my family and friends. But I would certainly not like to use it in-game.
First of all I do not feel it needed, secondly I do not want complete strangers spamming me on the Skype "phone" wanting me to enter the game, whenever I am seemingly available. Some people do not understand, that there is a reason why the phone is not answered.
Being in the same faction - or otherwise RP'ing together does not mean, that we are all close friends and need to sit on each others laps hugging.

You just made that up, since that has never happened to me in over a year and half in which I used FL with skype.

No it doesnt mean you have to sit on each others laps hugging. It does, however, mean that you should partake or listen to the more serious discussions that go on in your faction. You should be informed about its activities and current missions. And if you think that someone is going to pm you all that stuff just because you cbf to install a simple program and use it, you are dearly mistaken.

ye. you need no other program when you're indie. but official faction members have to be up to date and discussing everything ingame or via forums is crap.
just for example what i see/do in orderchats.
stuff you will miss without skype:
-events
-emerg channel
-discussions/planning for events and stuff
and so on.
so if you dont want to be included in the stuff what takes place in skype you are not informed and so on.
so you faction RP will be bad cause your lack of information.

But to inform about some changes You can use an FORUM.

events, discussions/planning - You can always planning on forum, or send an info to e-mail or by PM on forum.
emerg channel - yeahh... but it mean that I "have to be" online on skype in all time when I nerby comp,
If I'm in game You can always "call for help" by system chat - group on pm.

First part: Did not make it up - this is a reallifeexperience with Skype. So I take care not leaving my Skype account details with strangers.
Second part: Fine - if it works for you and your gaming here. But not for me, thank very much. The forums on DiscoveryGC more than fullfill my needs for group talks and "serious discussions".
This is one reason, why I am not part of an official faction - and perhaps never will be - I am playing to have fun with friends, that I know personally.
