Like a very straight forward thing.
Like you are a new recruit in the navy or something and this is what you will be supermotivated to role play while you get to know the game, and once you got to know it you'll see a new possibility to slip into some other faction, which is also very motivating to play.
Kinda like freeworlds?
When you start it up- you join a faction on the forums before you can play?
-A young girl who was betrayed by her emotions, manipulated into patricide/matricide, kidnapped, rescued, enslaved, and extinguished by a young entity who wasn't sure what it was doing.
-A grizzled old whiner who just likes chasing people down and asking them mostly inane questions.
-A straitlaced KNF pilot who doesn't know what his job really is
-A former KNF pilot who was betrayed and shot down, developed Stockholm Syndrome and now flies with the people who shot her down.
-A generic Liberty Navy captain who was forced into an untenable situation in Alaska, was forced into making the decision to kill a childhood friend to save his ship and crew. Later court-martialed and sentenced to death, rescued, losing more of his men in the process. On top of all that, his ship was hijacked and the crew infested.
-A bat**** insane grad student turned Lane Hacker who snapped after he realized that the ships he'd been helping shoot down were mostly passenger liners.
-A laid-back and genial Administrator who prefers to stick to the outer reaches of known space and offer a place of shelter to anyone who needs it.
-An AI with a foundational misunderstanding of mathematics fascinated by the concept of loneliness.
I have issues...

Treewyrm Wrote:all in all the conclusion is that disco doesn't need antagonist factions, it doesn't need phantoms, it doesn't need nomads, it doesn't need coalition and it doesn't need many other things, no AIs, the game is hijacked by morons to confuse the game with their dickwaving generic competition games mixed up with troll-of-the-day.
Well... we could enhance the combat....abit. I have new concept designs that could make FL very interesting in the combat gameplay but none I feel is worth mentioning because dev team is about as prude as Mary Poppins was. *pauses* As prude as Martha Steward? Hm Prude as Nancy Pelosi. Nah the prude comment isn't working....
How about as brittle as an cast iron fence?
Or lets say it this way. In life there is a box, and a bigger box around that box and so on and so on. Well some might venture outside from one box to another....thus increasing their capacity. Dev team never goes outside their original box.
Hm feels as though that is weak.
Okay!
Dev team .... needs more tacos in their salad.
Edit; RPwise if the story is banal you only have yourselves to blame. >_> Just saying.
' Wrote:Since Joe, you're navy boss... here is an example for you which I was thinking of:
Lots of people wanna RP navy, and go around asking people how to do it, and some end up doing a lot of police work cause they dont know what else to do..
Maybe we could make a "secondary fleet recruitment officer" which consists of a bar character on West point.
This guy tells people how to set up their ship, names, where to do missions, how to behave as a navy officer, and maybe gives them motivatn to do smoething, like fight on the front against the order in alaska or against rhineland in the southern systems.
That is an excellent idea. Using NPC bar characters to essentially info-dump on players is a great idea that may solve a lot of problems. However I don't see how it's related to your original post, and the title of the thread.
Essentially, the mod's content, background, and plotline will stay the same, but people would be better informed of it. That doesn't make it any more or less exciting or immersive, it just means people may know more about it. That again won't prevent people from crowbarring whatever their own personal fantasy into the fictional world that already exists in Disco.
I would support the idea of indo-dumping NPC bar characters though. Generally speaking, the news articles do that job, to an extent.

I try to make sure my characters are out of the ordinary, but still have faults and problems enough to make them interesting.
The only person you're impressing with a stupidly special character, is yourself. Masturbation basically.
Try ganging up with some people and roleplaying a believable family, like, five brothers or something like that.
Try roleplaying a realistic romantic relationship between one of your characters and someone else's.
Try not playing the Order.
Try giving all of your characters a crippling fault or a negative aspect to their personality.
Try being, I dunno, more normal.
Try making a good character, than killing them off somehow, an execution or a lost battle for example.
I kinda agree with it all.
Though I believe the Order can be roleplayed decently. But that'll need people to ditch the Osiris and fly recon in fighters. But that's the "I WANT BIG AND SHINY" syndrome. It's everywhere. Some people just love big ships.
P.S. The NPCs actually helping newbies is also a great idea. Always loved reading the lulzy news and rumors. They're pretty interesting when you have nothing to do.
I try to be as bland-less as possible. In the past I've ran a small fleet of LPI AI drones that eventually gained personalities when one ship got loose from control and become their 'messiah of freedom' and to find their mother ship the X-01, which was meant to be a Liberty Carrier. Never got the cash for that though.
I've run a mining ship of Mollies and Junkers who bounties anyone who crosses them, I ran as Trent who works behind the scenes in preparation for a new Nomad Invasion. I've ran as a Team Fortress 2 Medic in LWB/AGS which was my most fun ever, and I've been an Angel.
Right now, I'm running as a typical IMG escort pilot in training.
I never try to be special, I usually run behind the scenes and operate as such in RP and combat.
I dont think the rp can carry this server on its own. Its an element but it cannot be the whole.
This isnt the game for it. The only folks who will have a good time playing here will be creative enough not to feel overly invested into their own personal subplots and participate in EACH OTHERS characters lives..
As well as has a healthy good sportsmanship relationship with the pvp aspect of the game... which is the only.. staple.. feature here..
Theres rules to enforce the believability of faction play... but its nothing more then squad wars.
So as mentioned before.. People come up with a cool idea or a character or background they want to play for thier own satisfaction (and yes i mean mary sue and jane doe's here) you doing both for your own gratification. The only thing that MAKES this little game fun is realizing it comes from the interaction with other diverse rp personailitys here..
NOT your mundane or awesome pilot.. but the experiences Shared.
emphasis on this will make it anything but bland and fun as well as memorable.
