So without repeating the thread from which the quote is lifted, I'd like to know what you would regard as progression, or advancing, in discovery terms.
Aesthetic changes don't really mean much to me. Sure, they're great to have, but you can put a dress on a dog and its still not a suitable girlfriend.
Basically, what I'd like to see is plot advancements happen more often. Move the story a little so that things aren't repetitive and stale. Take for example the Gallic invasion. It can be done system by system, instead of them just showing up in the Taus in what feels like overnight.

This is kinda what I was thinking when I made the thread. I'm interested to see that most people's idea of advancement or progression seem to be things which are outside their own control.
In this case people seem to push their own attainment goals towards a new mod. Now... Personally, my own goals (as a player) are just to develop my characters and my good-times-fun to the maximum extent the mod and situation around me allows.
In my case, most of this centers around the [LN]. Attempting to keep the now very stable working relationship with the LSF steady in an oorp sense, and trying to find new ideas to make the [LN] a better environment for me, and for the people who play in it. For the last couple of weeks I've been slacking off a bit here, but that's due to work, and then the need to rest. These efforts include trying (note, trying) to keep the [LN] as an acceptable faction to interact with for those who're not a member. Getting the proverbial poop flung at you simply isn't fun.
What interests me is the way people seem to set their goals to a point which is unobtainable, rather than finding themselves more content with their current situation, and simply taking what opportunities come along.
As i started the goal was to "progress" to a battleship. After that it was the CAU 8.
And now its just having as much fun as possible and getting to know some cool people on the way.
My first goal was to fly around and explore the mod, see what it has to offer, and then make a plan on what I want to do there, like what ships and so on.
My second was to get a decent ship, a VHF. I only did missions for money, those huge trading ships looked to me like more time I was willing to invest. I wanted to have fun playing, not "working" so I can have fun later.
Then a faction asked me to join them, and my goals became to become better at fighting, get more money, and learn to RP.
Then my goal became to explore some other RP possibilities in other factions.
Then my goal became to develope RP that is entertaining, mostly to my self, and also other people. Pretty much all my chars are morons, and sometimes I RPed them so well that people thought I'm a moron. Oh well.
Then my goal became to help make some things better by posting on the forums, in particular things that I saw people stumble on over and over again and I asked myself why nobody made it better.
Now that I have some experience with the forums, my next goal will be to suck up to the right admins and mods, befriend them, make them take my word over anybody else's, rise to a position of power, and use it to destroy my enemies.

To Measure: Count the number of current/former admins and developers on your Skype contacts list. To Advance: Get more current/former admins and developers on your Skype contacts list.
RP my chars to the maximum possible. Develop favorites, hatreds, prepare interaction situations with other
players, decide when to be go unpredictable and when not. Simply put: Growing up with my char until i decide that they can retire.
RPing unusual chars. With unusual i mean something that you never saw on the server. So far i RPed with
great success:
A pirate who suffers from fear of any ship bigger than his own bomber...
A trader who's actually a fat women and attacks pirates with her 5K transport. "You threat a lady? Then taste
my rolling pin!"
A char who suffers from fear of flying
Teach a pirate in your trader about the fine art of tax dodging
A trader with empty cargo who, when he gets pirated, refuse to pay and threat the pirate that he's gonna
suicide *points the gun at his head* *takes a deep breath* *gunshot*
RP an engine failure and ask an outcast to shoot you, cuz you figured out that the thruster's injectors got frozen
In other words: RP the unexpected. Whenever i get the impression that the other player(s) are "" ,
i succeeded.
Utopist's goal:
See the day, when the source code of FL becomes available to the public for free and the devs getting their
hands on it. Only to see what they will do with it.
Quote:Maybe an update that didn't take 2 years to complete would be a start...
Yeah, more and smaller updates is also a good idea.
Seriously now the new update should be here soon, they've been preparing seemingly for ages. (changes here and there, pictures for the ships for 4.86...)
