I was thinking it would be cool if in 4.86 we could see some more variations of weapons. That is- not just your standard energy weapons.
More specifically I'm talking about adding Mass Drivers. Mass drivers are projectile based and their ammunition has the special characteristic that it bypasses a ships shield and deals direct hull damage. Only downside of course is that they require ammo. They differ from missiles because they do not automatically lock on to a target and do not have rockets at the back of the projectile.
So what are your thoughts on this? What do you think a balanced refire rate would be and which ships classes could equip it (fighter only/gunboat+ ect)
Unfortunately the game mechanics do not allow for direct-to-hull damage from weapons.
Mass driver systems (rail guns) incidentally, require very long accelleration rails. I could see them function as a main forward gun for a cruiser or higher - but not as a turreted system. Game mechanics wise, they wouldn't differ much from standard particle-based weapons.

Well, it's a matter of tech level, right? Since today, we would need a Boeing to carry a laser as powerfull, as Freelancer's fighter turret/gun. And not like BS turrets are small in size....

True. I could see them as more a tactical tool for larger ships- as an ordinary gun they could be too powerful. But I think the issue is more about balance than whether they could be actually be made as a turreted system by Sirius.
About game mechanics- if they are in another mod someone knows how to do it, and with all the technical know-how the devs have to offer (to make jump drives, player owned stations ect) I think it's feasible.
Think that if a weapon like this is given to a gunboat, and is doing ONLY hull damage, you would probably see lots of fighters/bombers instantly die. (or make it really slow)
It could be awesome.......but hard to ballance. Hmm and what about fast refiring Missiles? They ll take small damage, energy and turn rate but big refire rate and ehm ...speed. (but not bigger then 350) Oh and range.......small....(for caps.... lets say 1,5 or 1k)
