its not too hard - when you keep in mind that "inChar" your character will consider their faciton ships as the best choice. its not only about the strength of the armor, the agility and the powerplant. but for a roleplayed char, there are more aspects about a ship.

one that is ignored ingame, but one of the most important ones is the maintainence of ships. a gaian will most probably fly a startracker/eagle line, not only cause its the ships they can actually attain, but cause their technicians know how to maintain those. they have spareparts for those ships and can make sure that a damaged fighter can be repaired.

if a gaian was flying a zoner kadesh light fighter - the gaian technicians would be in trouble to repair that ship. they don t have the parts or the knowledge for it. ( thats not relfected in the game though )

if a faction has their only designs ( outcasts is a problem there, cause the borderworld ships are not really their design, or is it? ) they consider that superior, not only for the above reasons, cause they represent more than just a ship. a corsair flying a titan is proud to fly one of their greatest achievements in shiptechnology. ships in such societies might even be handed down from generation to generation, from father to son / daughter. - so such a pilot wouldn t even fly another ship, even if the new one was clearly superior.

a generic pirate is a problem, cause he has no home, no real faction, in terms of roleplay - he has nothing to be proud of as a legacy / history of the faction. he ll choose what works best for its purpose, but won t have such a tight relationship to the technology that a pure faction player / char has.
