The only drawback is that game will be looking a bit comics-like, though it gives two times more FPS (that is how I feel difference on my netbook) even at high resolution and maximum settings.
I did that, and it doesn't change anything for me... No comic-like colors for me, nor better performance.
Put a "read only" flag on Perfoptions.ini
Also, check if there is in general options, in screen resolution color depth is shown.
For me it is 1366x768x16 (I am launching from DLauncher with desktop resolution, but perfoptions fuses its color depth parameter).
Also, if your performance was good before, you probably won`t feel much difference.
