Norton/McAfee + Vista with Freelancer

Sorry to bring this back to life, but one thing without uninstalling the Norton (or any other AV for that matter) is to try to shutdown the programs and more importantly the services.

Switching AV off does not close the services it runs in the background and that's the key problem here.

Get autoruns (google it) and go to "Logon" tab and uncheck all the Norton related stuff to prevent them being loaded at startup. Then go to "services" tab and do the same. Now boot and you'll have AV free system without uninstalling it.

Another way without booting your comp is to kill manually the AV related processes from Task Manager (you need to know the names of Norton processes). The problem with this approach is that most of the processes launhced by the services will re-start automatically if killed. To prevent this head to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services. Stop all the Symantec related services, kill the processes and give Freelancer a try.


The autoruns is simpler way to do this. I haven't tried this personally because I don't need to but this works perfectly in theory. Anyway no harm is done since you can check the programs and services again.
