the idea behind "Turret Mode" is that while in a big ship - it might be a bit boring waiting for it to turn or maneuver or what not, if you switch to a turret you can still fire off some rounds while the crew does its thing. I always loved individual turret control - I think the first time I encoutered it was Wing Commander 2. There's also a mode where you can control all of the turrets at once
