Civilian Cruiser

Since I haven't visited this topic in awhile, maybe the idea isn't as "Blasphemous" as some thought...

I think you'll find that "civilian warship" is a contradictory term. Anyone who carries such heavy armaments into space stopped being a civilian the moment they undocked. The only non-military and non-unlawful militia factions that can afford Cruisers are corporations, so at the very least it would have to be a corporate cruiser.

1. There are a lot of things in Disco that don't make sense.
2. By civilian I'm pretty sure he means 'civ-tech' which means freelancers, mercs, etc. Which really just means they had the money and found shipwrights with the capability of cobbling this thing together (junkers?). Does it really make sense that a handful of freelanchers/mercs/privateers/pirates could afford to have a cruiser built? Meh. Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe this could be a SRP-granted ship.

Besides, the closest thing to a civilian warship in the mod currently are Zoner capital ships, most of which were a terrible idea to have roaming freely in their current form (players forgetting that they're supposed to be colony ships, not warships).

A terrible idea? The mod is not dead, Zoner caps are very popular, and Zoners that operate them do roleplay. There's just as much lolwuttery to be found in the houses where caps are more controlled. So what if the Zoner caps are often played as warships? With the Zoner lore being as subject to interpretation as it is, I contend that they are not wrong for doing so. I say as long as they're making some attempt to roleplay, we should embrace the fact that we're finding roleplay, and not worry so much about whether the roleplay's nature matches our expectations.

I like to imagine a Zoner cap captain as someone like Picard. Picard's a member of Starfleet, which is ostensibly a peacekeeping organization with altruistic agendas. But Picard makes moral choices and gets the Enterprise into fights based on them, he doesn't just putt around and go 'Oh, you're a Borg cube and you're assimilating that planet's people? Well you're not attacking me, so it's not my problem, bye!"

That's the kind of roleplay I think people are looking for when they make a Zoner capital ship. They want that freedom to wander around and make their own choices. And it's that same kind of roleplay that would be the justification for using this ship.

And I have to say, I feel a little insulted every time I hear someone crabbing about the Zoners, and their purported misuse of their caps. Like my roleplay isn't good enough for you, and I'm supposed to spend my ingame time putting around staring at the system backgrounds in between writing novels' worth of stories on the forums.


The model itself looks quite basic, and also has strong visual similarities to the "Hel" Rheinland Pirate Cruiser / "Vidar" Hessian Cruiser. A fair bit of work needs to be done before this submission is ready to be reviewed. If you can't or won't texture it yourself, you will need to find someone else to do it.

There is that, but... I don't know, I kind of dig it. I still think one of the engines is bigger than the other, though.
