If I were to remake Freelancer for X360, I would make something like that:
- Removing weapon list (because for vanillia it was pointless).
- Bringing up two distinct lists of contacts (ships and bases-solars).
- Weapons would be grouped into classes, that would be fired by RT and changed LT (just like in Echelon played with X360 pad).
- Removing mouse-pointer - ships were agile enough to face the object and hold A on pad to "click" on target (like base, planet).
- Addition to upper idea: keep the moving reticle, just minimilise it a bit OR completly replace it with full control.
- LT+RT would trigger CMs.
- D-pad would be used as F1, F2, F3 and F4.
- On planet/base, RT and LT would be used to change between places. On launch-pad, LT+A would be used to launch. A and B would be used YES or NO, to select commodities, equipment and so on.
- Mining would be remade into scoping (no firing at mini asteroids needed, cargo would happen to full itself, depending on additional equipment, by triggering it with any combination, lets say, LB+A or by that Y)
- Left thumbstick and right thumbstick would be either used for more FPP style (left strafing-forward-backward, right flying) or for "real" space sim controls (reversed, with right being more like speed control).
- SELECT on pad would be used for bringing up the profile (faction affiliation, cargo, and so on), which would be made into one thing, changed like places with LT and RT. However, it could pause the game (the only flaw of my idea, if it was remade for multi) or not (multi-friendly) and it would be the only place where mouse pointer would be available.
- X would be used for scanning, which would also pop-up that fancy ship scanning as another window, with showing the commodities in non-FL-like window, let's say, up in the corner.

The upper ideas however would require modifying the interface a bit.
