Hello everyone living in the thread that refuses to die. Have we decided on the new recommendations?
Well the flaming stopped so that's a start. Can we try to show some restraint before we post and not show what poor social skills and patience we have?
Since I abandoned the forums for other things, I've had a great time in-game, playing, fighting, losing, planning my next moves, developing characters, having a laugh with people I know only through character names, having excellent roleplay with factions and non faction players, even finding new ways to make trading interesting. The atmosphere in game has actually improved a lot coompared to when I started on the server back in Sept 07, people are trying harder. This is when I'm on in-game, maybe all you get is fascist oppression and wannabe Judge Dredds. But some things never change: sure Bretonia is quiet as always, sure there is nonsense of all sorts, but that is life.
An argument that actually began almost three weeks ago has run a long and convoluted course with the same tactics and grievances being aired, and yes, a sincere line of dialogue has become almost impossible. It's spilling over into other aspects of the forums and community. I know it's frustrating being mis quoted and having what you write torn apart and turned against you. I know it's insulting to have insults and accusations of ignorance thrown at you, and it is equally upsetting seeing it happen to another regardless of how much they might be the architects of their own fate.
Have any of you seen the threads about how new players are being treated? Or about the abuse of PvP? The forums have become a place to air grievances, and this I would humbly submit, is just a small part of what we all are about.
What I am noticing is that the grievances have become personal, maybe not intentionally. Accusations are directed at other people, whether by name or by associatin with a group (faction or i.d.) I've been a teacher for ten years (a real teacher not like Michelle Pfeiffer or Sidney Poitier in those stupid teachery films) and I can tell you one sure-fire rule that any teacher worth his salt lives by. "Love the sinner, hate the sin". Keep criticisms to what people are doing, not to aspects of their character. Many of the posts I've read show a degree of impatience and thoughtlessness that I doubt any of us would show in real life. That's writing on the internet for you. Maybe I should make a list of recommendations for posting on the forums....
Ooh all teachery and preachery. But yeah, the list is gonna be helpful. No harm in any "recommendations". I mean people have " recommended" all sorts of things to me, like, stop smoking, or have another drink, or ask her out, or don't touch that, or you have to try this. I didn't always listen.
