After several years of good kill ratios for him and those under his command, he was finally selected for the test fighter pilot program. He got his pick for which project wanted in on.
In the 790’s A.S., the cloaking technology that exists today wasn't available. It remained theoretical idea. However, Liberty continued to go after other stealth-related programs. This included optical camouflage, mirage technology and even painting their ships with stealth-coating material.

Stealth Coating

Stealth-coating paint/material would absorb scanner energy which turned it into heat which would subsequently be dissipated throughout the ship. It would then be released in small amounts out of the ship. [SOURCE]

Optical Camouflage

Optical camouflage was the idea of wearing clothes augmented with a biological gene, or component that allows it to blend with this surroundings by partially bending light. There were fishes and ocean life in several planets that could use this form of camouflage to hide against predators. Before the advent of superior cloaking technology following the Nomad War, the LSF had conducted research into this type of technology. It was used partially by some Liberty Marines special operations units during the decade long war with Gallia [LINK]. Before it could be applied to ships, cloaking technology was perfected and discovered, so this technology became obsolete. [SOURCE]

Mirage Technology

Mirage technology applied electrical cells made of elements that manipulated heat to create different patterns. This allowed the vehicle or spacecraft it was upgraded with, the ability to manipulate infrared scanning by the opponent. Basically, it could make a military battleship look like a luxury liner or a Defender heavy fighter look like a civilian freighter on Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) infrared scanners. Of course, you could still just look outside your space ships or space station’s windows and see a Defender heavy fighter, it was not an invisibility cloak or a projector that made your ship look like something else. But it was useful to get your ship to look like anything else on long range infrared scanner. The Liberty Navy wanted to invest in this to hide large fleet formations for military exercises near the borders of other houses. It could also be used to launch a surprise first strike against another house in the event of a war. [SOURCE]

These technologies combined, formed the precursor to the cloaking technologies we see in Sirius today. It was the pinnacle of stealth technology during the 790’s A.S. Hindmarsh chose this project, the "Nighthawk Project" when he qualified for the test fighter pilot program. The moment he had clearance to enter Zone-21 and the Alaska system, the psychopath within him began to emerge from the shadows.
