Doesn't XP have a service pack 4? You could upgrade to that if it exists.
Try disableing firewalls and protection etc. Unless you are browsing the web it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But if all else fails you could, like Linkero says revert back to 2.

Or go to Linux or Ubuntu or something that isn't Microsoft rubbish, but thats just a thought.

First of all Ubuntu is a Linux distro. Secondly there are only two ways which I know of to run Freelancer under Linux. One is a commercial product, the other is impractical.

Its a simple question, but have you made sure that there isn't some form of resident protection blocking FL from accessing your network?
