You don't have to give an engagement notice - You have to RP before hand. No where does the rule state you have to give an engagement notice.

Quote: 5.2 All attacks must be the result of some form of role play. "Engaging" is not sufficient. An attack is any hostile action that drains shields to less than 50%. Being hit with a CD is not considered an attack. If a player is attacked he has a right to defend himself regardless of who is attacking.

If you have RP'ed, and one part has indicated in some form that they are intending to attack you, you are free to fire or return fire.

Hypothetically that means that you could have exchanged pleasantries regarding the view from the cockpit, then start firing on the opponent. That would be bad form though.

You have, IMHO, to look at the idea behind the rule. I.E. indicate in the RP that you are planning to attack, with stuff like "Spooling up weapons systems", or "Helm, Execute attackplan Bravo 2 Red" during the RP. Just saying "Engaging" is pretty darn unimaginative, and roleplaying is supposed to let you use your imagination.
