You won't have to do anything other than install the new version of the Mod. As long as you don't uninstall Freelancer completely, your characters will still be there.

For character backup purposes, I'd suggest getting Freelancer Account Manager though. Here's the link to the thread about FLAM: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?sh...Account+manager
