each ship is an animal, having a brain...also, helps if you think about a nomad's cargo space as more of a stomach...imagine trying to feed something that big.....

In Battlestar Galactica: The Cylon fighters are living things, & yet Starbuck figured out how to fly one w/o having to 'Plug In' to it.

Back to my car analogy:

I cannot go into a car dealership & buy an anti-gravity upgrade for my Toyota, because anti-grav technology doesn't exist.

In FL'er terms...Nomad ships would not be available for purchase if it wasn't already a given that a conversion has already been achived.
