Even if I knew my car was fantastic and would always start, I would keep it running while in the middle of the desert (or insert other hostile environment)
It's a nice idea, I just would think that turning off your engines while in the middle of the most hostile place humanity has travelled and surronded by pirates no doubt, is a silly idea.
Well, sometimes you aren't in the midst of space. Think of the players RPing a Battleship in drydock...
