this may or may not be your problem...

i run Windows XP, the computer is maybe 6 months old, i noticed that i would get majorly bogged down (i mean nothing would run at all) with nothing running what so ever. i couldn't figure it out. i did the ctrl-alt-delete and my resources were hovering around 100% usage as i sat there looking at my (what i thought) idle comp.

then all of a sudden it cleared up and i got a windows update notice.

i turned off windows update and it's not happened since. i just manually update windows once a week.

it was scanning my complete hardrive everytime i turned on my PC and at random times while i was on it.
