'Cause all planets have a killzone which the ship AI recognizes as an atmosphere. Otherwise you'd bump into the planet surface and bounce back (which, incidentally, happened to me in a Hege on New Berlin once).
For suns it's called a Corona, even for dead suns that don't have that anymore.
