One thing that has bugged me about Freelancer forever is the way the universe works with ships.
A Battleship should be able to eat, just about any fighter, alive. Even with Nomad or Codename weapons, it would still be futile! Battleships should be able to hold larger and better shields then any other ship. The only problem would be when specificly designed Torp ships came in. Destroyers, Cruisers, and so on would also eat fighters alive. They're mainly for anti-fighter and to some degree, anti-capital class ships. They wouldn't be as hard as Battleships to take down, but still nigh-impossible without specialy designed bombers. Gunboats could be taken down by fighters, but at high cost. Gunboats are definatly anti-fighter, and as such should be able to take down a normal one. With upgrades and better piloting, a fighter could take one down. Then we get into Light Fighters (scouts, recon, etc.), Heavy Fighters (Mainstay of any fighter squadron, interceptors and anti-fighter ships), Very Heavy Fighters (For pestering heavy ships like Gunboats or Cruisers or other fighters), and Bombers (Not generaly good against fighters, but can launch torps against capital class ships. Very handy).
In Starlancer, you couldn't take out a capital class ship no matter what fighter you had. But with a torp bomber you could take them out, granted their shields were down. That's a very realistic view, not this "You can take anything on in a fighter" crap.
The Rhinland Battleship, unquestioningly the most powerful of all the Battleships, isn't anymore. It's a gigantic target that gets laughed at. Forgive me, but THAT'S MESSED UP!
An Eagle should not pwn a Battleship by itself. The Battleship should pwn the Eagle.
This is the real true story of rock and roll; it was not about anything more then, how to live your life, as a gangster, in sartorial splendor, and turning the world into a place where normality would never return again...- Malcolm McLaren
