The Liners and Miner are a bit stronger - like you say. If you can get someone to sell you a better shield, you'll be better protected, but with less cargo space.

Well, this is just my personal opinion, so take is as such
There is a big difference between: you can fight if you want, but youd be better off with an escort, and: dont even bother to fight, go get an escort
I RP a freelancer. I go wherever I want, and I do it alone. I have a few friends, but no permanent affiliations. And I will not hire an escort (now, this is partly RP, and partly the fact that few others are playing when I am).
You say that a Train should be vulnerable to a pirate. True, but it should not be a free kill. Heck, even battle ships can be taken down with a fighter how much of a threat would a Train really be, even with lvl 10 weapons?
As I said, the thought of a Train equipped with BS Missile Turrets is, honestly, idiotic. But a train should be able to defend itself somehow. As it is now, I cant even fight of the NPC pirates!
Now, if cargo space on all transport ships were to be increased I might fly another ship, trading cargo space for the extra security of more armour and better weapons. But since all other ships have less than half the cargo space of a Train, this is simply not viable. It is far better to take your chances in a Train and then accept the occasional loss of your cargo.
Add to this, the fact that the fighters have had their arsenal massively upgraded with the last couple of releases, its easy to see why no one bothers to fly the original ships anymore. Theyre simply outmanoeuvred, outshoot, outmatched, and very very dead.
And you pirates wonder why we traders run from every fight. Well, what choice do we have? We cant fight you
All I ask, is that Traders are given the means to protect themselves
