' Wrote:Latin was a lively language in New-France and French-Canada until 1960, if only because of the Christian church.

latin isnt dead. it's used by the Vatican. every day. its also used in the medical professions, as the medical names for diseases, anatomy etc were translated to sound more impressive (really true). i mean, if your gp said your leg pain was due to 'piriformis syndrome' you'd nod appreciatively, but if he said 'pear-shaped muscle syndrome' your response might well be 'lolwut?'

as for being dead in every day speech, i use broken spanish, pig latin, terrible french, some english, and the french/spanish/latin/romanian circle of friends - alright, girls im chatting up - we can form an understanding. Latin is the basis of the majority of the romantic languages. Greek is the basis of latin, as the defeat of (spurious detail of greek commander that i can't remember and cba to look up) meant he decamped to italy and founded the roman empire.

the actual corsairs were from the barbary coast, of north africa. think libya. hence tripoli station.

as for mangling the spanish in the wiki... well, after 800+ years, any language will evolve eventually
