I'm sorry for my ignorance on this, but who owns the source code?
We can try to address those guys and maybe get the source code, due to the time that had passed and the fact that the global server list will be off soon, there is a chance we could get it.

It's Mr Gates or better to say Microsoft Corp.

Freelancer has already passed the end of its official lifecycle at MS (no support anymore etc)...

But in the rather unrealistic case that we (or the public) get those thousands lines of code I'd already be happy to get some known bugs fixed (1st easier then later more complex).
To transfrom it into a multithreaded app would be a completely different story.

About the pettition, the only one i've seen was one calling for a FL2.. if there is one to open the code of the FLserver, please post a link so we could try and get the code.

There was some progress on that front, as w0dk4 and company managed to make the server multithread a bit. It uses 15% of the second CPU now. But making the server fully multithreaded without having the src is a different story.
