My new game engine inspired by Freelancer and Discovery.

Happened across this thread by chance, and I've got a question.

IF Discovery ever finally decided to get on board with this, and due to copyright infringement, etc. What is to be done about faction names?

The Outcasts, Junkers, IMG, Zoners, Xenos, Nomads? Those faction names are iconic. Take that away and suddenly it isn't the same game, even if it has the same concept.

I love the idea of a new engine with vast new possibilities, but this ^ would be heartbreaking.

Dunno, few weeks ago all mods containing BSG content were removed from ModDB, I wasn't much into this stuff but you can get the idea.

Good luck on creating a whole game on no budget.

I'm also curious how you'll manage to host / administer the servers that can support 1000+ players slots at a time. Servers aren't exactly cheap and 24/7 administrative support isn't either. And if this game gets popular enough to garner that many players, you are easily looking at Microsoft slapping a Cease and Desist letter.

No. Copyright enforcement isn't restricted to sellable products. Plenty of free-to-play fan games got shut down by their respective IP owners.

A community of some 10,000+ people coming and going constantly on a forum? Jackpot. You could almost say it is self-sustaining.
