It's a fantastic pirate transport, sure, but the best transport for self-defense? It's absolutely useless at self defense.
It can't even hurt a fighter.

If you want to dish out the pain - Pirate transport and Raba are a prime choice and i have heard a lot of evil deeds done by the Armored Transport.

These ships ahv good hull for their size, good cores ...are agile and not as fat as the battletranses....

The other choices mentioned are good too.

Totally agree. With some gimmicks like a cloak and docking modules it becomes a real good utility and rp ship. In a few months of flying it around, I never even got close to getting killed.
Although you should still have some awareness. Just having that equipment isn't a free ticket towards safety. You still have to use your brain.

I personally prefer the salvage frigate - its has gunboat class weapons and if you are quick and have the right weapon setup you can defeat 2 bombers at the same time. That said you do need to practice a lot and often for that to be possible.

Kamome, Big Dragon, Raba, Behemoth, Renzu Liner, Prison liner, Mammoth and Percheron. Depending on what you are trading and who you are allied to, find the one that fits best. Obviously, the PTran and Raba come with some particular rp that is hard to ignore.

I have found though, that the pilot is much more important in these situations. A good transport pilot needs to know when to run and when to fight. In some situations trying to run will quickjly get you dead, while standing your ground will let you live another day. Sometimes its very much the opposite. Sometimes you got to talk your way out, sometimes it will get you killed. Learning which situation is which is much more important that which transport you have.

Whale - with Hvy CM's ~ and Good pilot talks ( which really determines if you are dead or alive ).
Also, I would put a lvl 3/4 shield on it for faster re-gen speed, it annoys bombers.
