I finally got it working!!! I got sent my redeem code via email for the culture pack but didn't realise I also had another redeem code, the main one on the back of the handbook...(facepalm). Well N00b mistake figured out, I can now get to it.
Also yeah there was some good mods for the original. There was this really neat LOTR total conversion mod for alexander which was great.
And sure, I'll play vs you Ed online, however I'm extremely unexperienced with multiplayer. As long as you promise to behave just like AI, I'll stand a fighting chance.
I must join Ed- and Joe here and +1 them both.
I agree on what they said. I find really sad that this miserable console pre-ported piece of shiets are marketed as PC game. Sad end of really glorious series. I hope that the mods would fix it somehow but it is not a game that is worth to buy.
Big expectations and glorious fail in Diablo 3 console style.
Also LOTR mod was not for Alexander but for Medieval 2 the name is Third Age and it is awesome, killing tons of low grade orcs is fun or play as orc and use the Trolls to troll the humans, or elf or get the nasty Nasghul warriors, so great mod. http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war:

Govedo - there IS A LOTR mod for RTW that is called Fourth Age: Total War (or FATW). It's latest version is called The New Shadow. Very cool mod!
Set basically a few generations after what takes place in LOTR, it only covers the areas of Middle Earth around Gondor/Mordor and Harad, and you can play as the Reunited Kingdom (Gondor), Rohirrim, Easterlings, Haradrim, Dunland, or Kingdom of Adunnabar (which is basically an evil Gondor, but with the ability to train Orcs and Trolls, but in its final form they are hoping to encompass the whole map (including control of new factions like the Elves and Dwarves, who can only be played extensively in multi-player combat).
Thanks for this post, i have also lost countless hours with *just another turn*. Rome, Medieval and Shogun 2 are my favorites. I was waiting for Rome 2 but it seems i will make due with the mod Govedo posted in another thread, Roma Resurectum,
I havent really been able to fully enjoy a total war since Rome 1 / medieval. Shogun was definitely a step up since those games but still lacked what i was wanting from it. I honestly havent played RTW2 much except for a few hours on launch. Being more entertained with other games (EU4 mostly, which compared to EU3 is a definite step up)
