This is usually used in trading, where the player forms the other characters under his control and trades with a much larger cargo space than it would be possible with one character.
This is considered cheating on the Official Discovery Freelancer Server.
Trying to lie about your situation can lead to harsh sanctions, usually deleting the ships and money involved. If a player is caught multiboxing, usually very easy to spot due to ping similarities between characters, they undergo a ''multiboxing test'' where the admin requires the player to perfom different actions to confirm if there is one or multiple players behind the characters involved.
EDIT: If you have a brother or friend, who tends to play in the same house as you at the same time as you, it is highly advisable to contact the admin team in private and explain the situation before you try doing this.
What if... Oh, nevermind, you've replied me in edit.
Because people were abusing it? To make more money, and for other obvious reasons. But seems like the punishment is not that severe. Maybe a mere warning (think)
More like a way to avoid making useless "Unless" exceptions to an already complicated rules list.
If it is forbidden, it should not have a huge amounts of asterisks attached to the rule.
EDIT: Quite frankly, I don't mind people multiboxing. If there is a group of traders flown by the same person, I get to ask more money from them. And if they chose to be stupid, I tend to intentionally let some go, while blowing some up, while stripping off guns from the other, making the player do a HUGE amount of micromanagement as he recovers from that attack.
It all balances out in the end.

As far as my latest knowledge, multiboxing can be used, but solely for equipment transfer, and for a very little time. This was stated by admins multiple times in the past, and I did not hear anywhere since that multiboxing is forbidden for equipment transfer.

Seems we need a green comment, please.
I would honestly love a green comment approving this, because it's not such a tediously defined example needing several well-lawyered statements or exceptions to the rule.
Right now it is impossible to multibox without specifically going around it. As such I'd assume it is forbidden.

Because in the past Admins stated that you can fly two of your ships by yourself (multibox) if you use it strictly only for equipment exchange (when you don't have any other options) and for the short time needed for the exchange, despite the rule wording being the very same.

Admin green quote incoming:

Find a friend or ask an angel to help with this.
So I wouldn't even try mate. Best not to test the admins themselves, but the anti-cheat software is even harsher.
