XP really isn't as godlike as many people seem to portray it. Just sayin'.

My desktop still has Win XP. But that is an old bugger which I hardly use anymore.

Windows 7 is a pretty solid replacement if I'm honest. Likelihood anything being as solid as as XP is slim, could leave that thing running weeks and weeks without a reboot. 7 though i think is a pretty good contender. Nowadays 8 manages 3 days before it gets sketchy. No surprise there lol

The best part is that when XP first came out it was comparable to ME in bugs, stability, and usefulness. xD

Still got it, still running it. My toaster chugs along where other, newer machines fear to tread.

I have Win8 since September 2013. It has its clumsy UI, but overally it's faster than 7. I know I can use the Classic Shell to make it look like 7, but someone around my surroundings has to know how to deal with Metro.

Microsoft did release additional security updates for XP after April 8th of last year, but this does not mean the OS is anywhere near secure!
If you continue to use XP after the end of life date you're subject to all of the other vulnerabilities/exploits in XP that weren't ever patched, along with new ones that develop in the wild. Even if you have an antivirus program thats still operational, it is highly unwise to continue using XP for any sort of personal/financial tasks. Microsoft is still offering limited support for enterprise-level versions, or runs that one on POS/Kiosks, but none the less it really boils down to how easy it is to hack XP verses a newer OS like 7 or 8.1.

Someone also mentioned XP ran better than 7, and I would completely disagree. The speed of a computer depends on a number of variables besides whats on the software level, like your CPU, RAM, Mobo, HDD, etc.

I'd also agree with Explorer's statement that 7 is a great replacement for XP--its the most similar UI, it doesnt crash and burn horribly like the abomination that is Windows Vista, and it doesnt tweak out to the level that 8 & 8.1 do when theres bugs with UEFI, Update Installation, bugs w/ metro apps, etc.

But don't listen to me, I'm a computer technician, not a doctor >.>

I did like Windows XP a lot. It ran quite well, and the machine had decent specs for the time. Across the nine or so years that I used the OS, it only blue screened half a dozen times. Anyway, earlier this week, I passed by some maintenance worker with it on his laptop ... the feels were reals.

These days I run Win7 on my desktop computer, and it's been been a great replacement. My main issue with it has been its lack of backwards compatibility with some older games, such as Earthsiege II and more recently Dungeon Siege, for some reason. I definitely prefer it to my 8.1 laptop, but despite the bad rap, eight actually isn't that bad.

I do have another machine, though, which is about twenty years old and runs Windows 98 SE. It might have a 75 Mhz Intel Processor and 40.5 MB of RAM, but it still works just fine.
