Use Pirate transport...its perfect for that job from more then one point of view...Just dont try to pirate Liner with it alone...fighter might get useful as escort in that case.
I'd wait untill 4.85 as there are lots of new ships to choose from, before you go spending money on ships now.
But out of the Turanic or the Pirate Train, I'd definitely go for Turanic Freighter. I dunno why, but for the character you described, I think a small Freighter would be more of the poor mans ship than a big ol' train.
If you steal stuff to survive, I think a train would be overkill, but with 400 cargo space that the Freighter has, it seems just enough to survive.
I would suggest the Firefly because thanks to that great TV series, I always think of Firefly when I think of "poor space smugglers".
