Ya...I never really got much of the distinction between hunter, mercs, and freelancers

Heres my attempt at it:

Hunters- individualists out for money alone who hunt other people

Mercs- individualists out for money alone who will do any random job

Freelancers- individualists who... just kind of do whatever they want *shrug*

Basically, my bounty hunter character belongs to the 3rd category, using a BHG ID. He's a member of an -authorized- private company, registered to the 'Bounty Hunters Guild' Faction. So yeah, lawful.

You can also refer to a Freelancer or Mercenary as a bounty hunter, only that these work for themselves, although there are some mercenary companies out there. However, these are not registered to the 'Bounty Hunters Guild', therefore they are less trusted, as they can perform both lawful and unlawful contracts, and are usually well known for their less orthodox practices (not that the BHG is full of saints, but still - an 'authorized bounty hunter' might do a lot for some cash, but a mercenary will do -anything- for it).

As you can see, the term 'Bounty Hunter' shouldn't be associated with the BHG Faction, as they can represent some very different entities.

Mercs are hired soldiers. One does not generally tell a mercenary company "Go kill X, and we will pay you", which is more Bounty Hunter style (yes, I would think there are lawful and unlawful Hunters), one would contract mercenaries to "fight Y nation", or "clear out Z area", rather than posting a specific target.

Bounty Hunters are, essentially, hired assassins, seeking out a target and eliminating it, while shying away from a "full frontal assault!" approach.

However, according to the game lore, the Bounty Hunter's Guild (Ie: those lawful hunters that have banded together for security and contract sharing) provides a range of services: escort, target hunting, and...other...things (I can't think of any:P)

A man, no heart, no emotions. Only interested in the reward. He did bounties, the houses offers. He work out the dirty side of the law, put his head into some ugly scenes, visit the strangest places, to find hinds, where his target may be. No emotions.

That's... a really good idea for a character. I might try it if I find myself wanting another;)

to be quite honest, being a bounty hunter isnt about 'I R NAO GOING TO HUNT YOU FOREVER CUZ I CAN LULZ'. infact, being a bounty hunter requires a bit of sense. the misfortune is that after repeated 'offences (if you will) by certain members of disco (all in all, anyone who plays on disco, is a member of the community, regardless if they introduce themselves to everyone on the forums or not), the stereotype that being a BH on disco means your allowed to hunt tiny pirates in big ships has brought the reputation for being hunter down rather badly.

there are quite a few BHs (including mine) who do NOT offer services against pirates if no prize/reward (in the form of cash, or maybe guns etc) is offered. sure, the BHs have certain enemies who they do hate and may tend to attack more openly than other pirate factions, but even then, many BHs are ex pirates, ex military, merc who joined the guild, or civlians looking to make a quick buck, etc.

sometimes, B hunters may have a deal with the local law enforcement groups (for example, at one point in time, my BH used to work for the LN, for every killed pirate i got a mill, for every killed pirate cap, 3 mill), which are RPed ofcourse so that everyone (including the admins in these times) know whats going on, and that the BHunters arent just using it as an excuse to PVP whore.

in the end, id be a bit surprised to see a BH voluntarily attacking minor pirate groups without any sort of reward. after all, even the BH's are a bunch of greedy bastards.

From the rules: #3. From most of my in-game experience: #5, defined as "I get to powertrade for a week and then buy the biggest ship I can find and go randomly shoot people that I don't like"

Voted "None of the above"

Option 3. That's what I do.

Bounty Hunter in the Freelancer universe refers to a member of the bounty hunters guild. If you have an unlawful who hunts bounties, he is simply a mercenary, NOT a "bounty hunter".

Grimly, the Bounty Hunters Guild is a lawful organisation. They don't take out bounties against lawfuls (lawful in the eyes of the Houses)
