As Yue said, if it crashes the game, it's generally a bad idea:)

Obvious answer:

Kiggles' Liberty Cruiser was dead in the water once, ages ago. You can disable the engines as far as I'm aware on vanilla ships. Perhaps just certain ones? Not sure.

Some cap ships have component hard points that were originally designed to represent engines and command decks amongst other things, the original idea as far as I can tell was to make cap ships operate like the ones in starlancer, blast systems off the ship and it looses the functionality of that system, now they just made them so if you blast one off the ship blows up. (At least on an NPC, could someone see what happens when this happens to a player controlled vessel?)

You might be able to restore some functionality in that aria, depending on how much the original developers finished and left in the system.

Why not? I've seen mods that have engines mounted like thrusters. You can change the speed of your ship and what not depending on the class. (Kinda like Shields, LF, HF ect) LF's could have quick ones, HF's a little slower ect.

Also to be able to change the color of the engines would be cool too.

Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.

I'd say no, everyone would end up buying and using the fastest engine, not to mention the fact that engine are one of the few systems on FL ships that are built into the ships very framework, modifying the engines would be extremely expensive and time consuming as disassembly of the ship would have to take place.

That's why they'd be hard to get.

What one mod did, don't remember the name now, was when you engaged your engines, it used the ships energy when you had it on full impulse, then when you hit the thrusters it burned the thrusters and not the energy, allowing it to replenish. The engines didn't make the ship go faster, but depending on what engine you had, it used less energy.

Not saying that's what we could use here, just throwing it out there for an FYI.

It is possible, but hasn't been even attempted in Discovery development yet, since there are more important things to do right now - like bugfixing. Just so you know, there already are ships with destructible engines in 4.85 ... guess which?

So like.. say someone blasts your engine. What next ? You'll be as useless as dead, basically. Unless you could actually capture the person, if the engines are busted. Some /capture command maybe.

Oh well, most likely not possible.
