This is a simple one I made in Computer Programming class right before school ended.. It's probably that computer's background still. >.>

Pic

I could give you a walkthrough on making planet clouds if you want to, but it'd be easier to do that over Skype instead of forums.

One tip I can give you is when you're looking for textures, find the biggest ones you can (dimensions, x/y). That way you can downsize them as needed and it causes less distortion than having to increase their size.

EDIT: Edited to link, photo was too big for forum.

I an using satellite images as texture, plus 2 layers of duplicated basic layer of planet, with Emboss filter used, and changed to linear dodge, plus some changes in levels. I think it makes atmosphere looks more realistic. I have learned this on one tutorial. I would like to upload link, but it is in Czech rep. language.

@Ventana: Looks nice, but i see you wasnt paying attention to starfield

@Dab: that is one awesome work.

Wanted to ask, how did you made that backround in your signature.

Mostly with Illustrator actually, rather than Photoshop. Pen tool, a few brushes, twirl/spiral effects, clouds effect, then coloring. Most of them time when I'm making backgrounds I just start messing around with pens and brushes. I don't usually have a 'plan' or 'design.' Same for my starfields/nebulae.

That background is actually just a small snip from a much larger picture. Unfortunately my old harddrive broke about a month ago and I lost most of my photoshop pics (~10GB worth). I've only got what I uploaded to photobucket, so I'll see if it's on there.

EDIT: Not on there.. I've actually got a lot less saved than I thought..

I can make somewhat ok planets... (with a FREE program:P). They could be more unique though. I'm just against using premade textures. I prefer to make them myself so it's truly original. Although explaining it would be tough, seeing as every planet I make never seems to follow the same model. There's always different changes.

I'd say just keep practicing using different tutorials and see if there's a method you find you can do (in which you are pleased with the results!).

I wonder if that made any bit of sense, or was helpful in anyway. Probably neither.

A useful technique for getting original landmass shapes is the threshold tool.Render some black and white clouds.Image > Adjustments > Threshold.Play with the values, cut out a planet, and sphereize the fool!

I used to have loads of planets sitting on my hard drive, but it seems I deleted them all in a fit of madness.Oddly enough a picture of a horse with a beret managed to survive the purge...

In reality, there aren't many planets with a rotation that are a perfect sphere. However, in the realm of digital art in which we can create what looks both aesthetically pleasing and what suits the design we have in mind, a more perfect circle would probably be a better shape than an oval.

Also, even if planets aren't perfect globes in reality, you don't really see that with the human eye.
Point is, it should be circular.
