Hmm, I have to admit...I hate it when a player simply begins to engage me in the middle of an RP session

you didn't need the element of surprise as you certainly had the advantage in the fight which is the only real reason to jump someone, I view it as bad form...but thats not to say you didn't have the right to do it, and it seems like pretty bland RP anyway, so I don't think anything worth while was lost

Sounds like you did everything right there Stoat my man. Although, if they had thier heads screwed on the right way, as soon as you appeared through the gate they should be hightailing it out of there.

people sometimes insist on "you must clearly state to open fire" but that is untrue...

one must apply "sufficient roleplay" before an encounter as an encounter must be based on roleplay. - that is ALL. - one must not say "oh, and by the way, i am about to trigger my guns in 3 seconds - i hope three seconds give you ample time to prepare"

suffcient roleplay before a hostile encounter means that each party is very clear that a hostile encounter is about to follow. if a trader tells a pirate "i would rather die than to pay you" - the pirate can pretty much blow him up without another word ( provided he made a demand before and sort of introduces himself of course - the usual ) - the trader cannot say that the attack came unprepared.

Especialy on my Mandalorian Merc, I tend to overdo the roleplay sometimes.
Sitting there, discussing, explaining sharing words with my enemy.....until their 20 GBs arrive:P

The best way to do this, is to make your intentions clear via the roleplay.
Your opponent then knows that youa re hostile and may shoot at him.

If I then start the engagement, I mostly say that he should ready himself, otherwise it would not verry honorful for me. (A MM thing with the honor, mastered by my character)

I usualy pass by the vessel and shoot a few salvos past its bow. This should get them the idea what I am up to next.

FYI, "Diana", I didn't call that gunboat, he came on his own. And, we will talk about honor later ^^

When you told me to "Ready myself" I wasn't sure if that was a hit, that you are going to engage in a moment. I am almost never, unless it's totally clear.

And about Stoat, if my char was a bounty hunter, he would answer that "make us" by "ok" or rather "as you wish" and start fire.

Hihi, your case yesterday was something different *laughs* 2 gunboats are not 20.

Feel free to visit our hunts on Gamma some times. Then you know what I mean *laughs*

And I enjoyed the chatter yesterday, was verry cool. Thats why I love to be around Kusari or stumble over Kusarians in Bretonia. Its always a hell of a fun to poke proud Kusarians until they glow red *giggles*

Hehe yeah, the "ready yourself" thing compared with a few rounds shot past the ship is more for smaller crafts. Since its really annoying if you sit there and loose your shields, without the option to get moving or dont be such a good target.

Basically the intentions have to be clear. Its a no go in my eyes, if someone talks with his enemy in a cuddly way and suddenly starts to shoot.

I can see the both sides here. Because I've been on both ends of the thing we are talking about. Meaning I thought that starting the pewpew after such a conversation was ok, and the other guy thought I took the sucker punch.

As well as I have indeed "suffered" the same fate. Having a RP conversation and "suddenly" guy goes from threatening to hostile.

That's why I try to keep my distance to say 3k during these pre-pewpew conversations. But sadly some do want to maneuver for the best position while talking and buzz around your ship.

Flying under radar.

I stay out of weapon range while I type something. IF other person wants to chat, we can sit at 5-10k and talk in local.

Hmm, I usually give a clear warning on when I am going to engage. I RP first, for as long as possible, when things get tense and it seems like both sides are edging for a fight - I'll engage them with a clear warning.

I once had people yelling at me because I couldn't get a clear engagement notice across. I've learnt my lesson.
