I think it's a great thing.
I hope that it can influence ingame GC placements and things.
No reason why it can't : Yes the characters on the Event server don't really exist, but it gives people a chance to play something that they haven't yet. I know I enjoyed playing on the GRN side, and if the opportunity came up, I would also play on the KNF side next time. I don't have either on the GC, simply because of time factor. I don't have enough time to trade for anything near a capital ship on the GC, only to have to wait every four hours to play it where it's supposed to be played.
Obviously, smaller conflicts e.g. Rogues VS LPI could be overall/generally limited to fighters and 1-3 capitals, but it would still be quite fun IMHO, to have 50+ players on each side. Get the right grouping and strategy and you will see some seriously hard to beat flight wings forming.
There's so much possibility with this event server, it's hard to know where to begin.
One thing I would suggest is that Igiss take a look at what's happening within the fights themselves and see if he is able to write stories around those and allow the GC community to influence the stories he writes. He is the GM, but it would benefit us all, if he is able to take into account how things actually work out in real live fights. E.g. Have the overarching storyline that is intended, but also allow it to change and take more time if necessary to get the desired outcome. For instance, if KNF whooped GRN's collective arses in a good and solid defense, even if outnumbered, then delay the outcome of GRN winning that space for some real-time months. Don't be in a rush to bring out the GRN / (or other plot anchor) is what I'm saying.
One thing I do like about the event server, is that (unless you stick with known names of leaders or characterse who are on the GC server) generally speaking, you are anonymous. You get to play as a mook. That's a pretty cool experience in itself.
The other thing that impressed me was that being able to actually just thrash PVP out, within defined RP roles (but not too defined), is also pretty cool. Obviously staying in character is a Good Idea but it is refreshing to be able to "reengage" and thrust or cruise away, and actually use some legitimate military strategy, (like reinforcment, strategic retreats, ambushes, and other tactics) without worrying about being sanctioned. If we are somehow able to bring the magic of that from the Event server into GC as a whole then I think GC itself will benefit in ways that we can't yet see right now.
It was magic. Those are the only words I have to describe what I witnessed on the event server.
