I was going to say something similar..But he does state a good point

Advancements don't have to happen through external sources such as mod updates.

People are getting bored because they're too unimaginative, uninspired and perhaps bound to tradition and convention to attempt new, interesting ways of roleplaying. They rely on new hardware (ships, equipment etc) to feel occupied and as soon as they're bored with them they'll demand new things again. Or even worse, troll and annoy other players.

Some people are just not truly dedicated to roleplaying as others but rather feed on the new content and playerbase. I'd gladly play on a roleplaying server with only vanilla content myself as there're no limits to how far I can develop a character, not to mention any other.

Progression is a person or group setting a goal and either A)achieving it or B)blocked in such a way as to achieve the goals of another.
For instance, IC| has several goals, and we will have progressed when any of them are achieved or blocked by another's goals.
This is in contrast to a OORP block, in which the goal is blocked for oorp reasons or with oorp knowledge or simply blocked by virtue of game and server mechanics.

This community is based around the game.
The game is what we see every time we log in, every time we fly our ships around in space.
It's what we are here for really.

For myself, advancement of the mod is simple nuts and bolts - ships, systems etc.
Advancement of the roleplay is more to do with the players and less to do with the currently 2 year old storyline.
Advancement of roleplay needs to be supported by advancement in the mod, otherwise things are just too difficult.
Advancement of the mod in line with the advancing roleplay also removes the spectre that haunts all Internet/imagination based games - the "No u" argument. Without any actual hard material or evidence, people can simply deny or go against all the wonderful creations people have already made. An example of this is the idea of supersoldiers and psychic characters. Without being defined ingame properly, they are relegated to simply being personality traits.

All in all:
Advancing roleplay, such as the SCRA attacking Omega-50 or the Order and Corsairs falling out, should be supported by advancements in the mod, such as system changes/ship updates/equipment updates.

The advancing roleplay itself is everywhere but on a larger scale, or mod notable scale, it is seen in player factions. It can take the form of attacking certain people or working out trade deals or even building new stations or infrastructure.

We can talk to the high heavens about how the Corsairs struck a deadly blow in Dresden but it will always remain as talk. Backing it up with system changes concretes the player's involvement in the community and mod.

That gives away the ones you haven't discovered, plus they are 'unreliably' and thus not automatically calculated into your system.

ontopic- Any player can create advancement of the game, just gotta be imaginative.

' Wrote:For me it's about the characters I play developing, which of course requires change in the world around them. That changes takes many different paths. I think about my own experience with the AFA when I think about this question. When I started playing the FA, I was basically the only player who played it, and basically the only player who had ever played it on the server. It was an open frontier, I was able to shape the NPC factions rp, as I shaped Ze'ev Barak's personal rp, and the rp of the AFA. This was long ago, and today, there arent really any factions that you can jump into and really define the identity of the faction, there are people who play almost every faction, and there is significant amounts of lore and player driven rp that is going on that has to be taken into consideration. I think more current examples of progression are the developments between the Order and the Corsairs, the Bretonian relationship with the Outcasts, and the developments between Kusari and Liberty.

I think a good way to judge development is whether other players jump on board with it. Developments like that can come from small groups or individuals, or from large factions or groups of factions.

This

And it is still very much possible. As long as you put effort in it, your characters can influence their environment in a positive way. As you can guess from my signature and my avatar, I am a fanatic Hellfire Legion member, one of the things I love about [HF] is how we change(once exiles driven by revenge, now a politically-motivated rebel military. Once pirating, now fighting pirates etc.). As non-vanilla faction controlling that is of course easier, but for an individual to be able to change something in a faction is advancing for me.

Next to that is to have a character of which you RP multiple aspects of life. Not just a job (this is often the case with lawfuls) or a just private life (these are rarer than job-only I think. Mostly freelancers) But both. And to really have the character's life being a story, of course this can be done by forum RP, but what I like most is doing it mostly in-game, and forum RP more as extra or supporting.

I think I pretty much reached both of these with my main character Tharog Frosthearth. He has a love-live, has friends of every kind, even has 'sister' (by affection, not blood) He was lawful, but was declared rogue. And now? Now he is a high guy in the Hellfire Legion, he changed over time his views are influenced yet he is still somehow the same. That is all for the RPing his life as a story. As for the influencing of your chars environment, this same Tharog is also (in)famous in New York as the DJ of Hell FM:cool:. Hell FM is something I am honestly quite proud of. And another way in which I influenced my the RP environment: Guided by the rest of HF High Command I have written the last paragraph of the 'introduction' in the HF faction status (note: This is only in the actual faction status, the recruitment thread still needs updating)

As said more updates,and randomness.
Idea's
Well having something like say the Wild NPC's suddenly appear in a new area attacking traders/military/pirates along a TL out of the blue.IE log off as normal, log in next day,and jump on TL.POW! lane disrupted by Wild NPC's,and they wail on you, catching you completely by surprise.
Having say a base in Kusari/Bretonia zone suddenly change sides. They rebel/have a mutiny, get boarded what not.
Have some Random NPC's suddenly flying bomber patrols like in gallia with SNAC's. both lawful, and unlawful.
Have in say Alaska a new stationary BS appear along route to/from JH's Order/Liberty even Nomad does not matter. Big surprise for all that go their.
Have a whole new race/alien/faction/AI,or even the Monkeys suddenly show up with own ships(or can use generic)and start causing trouble.(Hostile to all,and NPC ONLY!!!)
Maybe have new mining fields open up suddenly(but do not anounce them)and other's close down. Not daily, but say once a month or so.Randomly like maybe 2 weeks, then 5 weeks, then say 3. Keep in random, and confusing so players need to look around more, and "discover"
Now here is a big one. Completly move the wrecks to new locations throughout the system they are in.Say they are drifting,so people cannot camp them, and wreck farm daily.Make dealers work for CODE's,and whatnot.
Just some random ideas. Please do not flame them.

Also Official factions changing NPC RP i think is a good idea, but does not work. Some people choose a faction cause they like the ships/RP/Friends,and enemies, and so on. No a small group comes along and tells them you can no longer fight these guys,or have to fight these others, and it ruins some peeps RP. Maybe they even had month's of RP put into their chars. Not picking on Official factions here. It has just been proven that changing NPC RP does not work well, and causes resentment.
Now if said Official faction went their own way,and maybe got a variation on ID,or new one,and followed their own RP that is cool. Just do not force Indies to change their RP. We all seen in past how that works out.People will fight, and maybe get FR5'd from a faction they love. Not really fair,or fun for all.

Now some of my idea's may be good,or bad. Some may be easy to do,and others dam hard,or impossible i really do not know.
