Just because i could get sanctioned for using it doesn't mean its a swear word. For example it gets used on TV before the "Watershead" hour (After this time "Adult" stuff can be shown on tv, before this time only things that are acceptable for children to watch can be on), its a common word used by most people to emphasize doing badly at something or that something is bad.

I dunno... theres a clear difference between telling someone he has a poo poo ship and telling him his ship is a a piece of sh**...

Some words carry a lot more malice than others do.

I'm sure Admin look at the intentions of the swearer when making a decision.

Following on from Angelfire's idea...

A player saying "S#!t, I've just had a wing blown off", is quite different from another saying "your mother is a piece of s#!t"

Hmm, best to simply avoid swearing in system chat altogether. As a rule I sometimes lapse into the occasional obscenity in private chat with a friend, such as when a particularly annoying and loathsome NPC patrol bashes my capital ship into the atmosphere of a planet causing me to blow up. So annoying :/

Thats the problem with English. Most words have different meanings depending on the sentence there used in.

but honestly - ( allright, i find most of the swear sanctions rediculous, cause i think kids pick up nastier stuff in RL everywhere - and a well made post in best oxford english aiming to hurt the others feelings can be much worse than some swearing - but that aside )

i can understand it when someone swears in RL. - its unconscious sometimes - the words are out before you are aware of them. - but this is written down stuff. - its not like the words appear magicly on the screen before you are aware of them.. the people that swear are fully aware of what they write.

and since i *know* that swearing in any form is frowned upon, - why swear at all? - its pointless anyway. it has as much effect as swearing at the guy driving in front of your car. - he won t hear you. its usually just venting - but if its just venting... i m sure no one will get sanctioned for swearing loudly in his own room without writing it all down.

its a fact that some ppl don t like the most common swear words here and get the report button out quickly. - a bit of a shame, but if they feel right to do so.... - the easiest thing is to not write down what you may have spontanously thought about the other person. - saves a lot of trouble after all. and thats not a matter of what gets sanctioned harder. - its a matter of not get sanctioned at all.

This is also what makes English the greatest language in the world. It is why our literature & humour is so rich. We greedily inherit words & spoken concepts from all cultures and effortless morph it into the fastest evolving language of all time.

Id agree when its "proper" swear words like the "Dreaded" F-Word. But for example if it wasn't for the fear of getting sanctioned id proberly at some time say something like "sh#t that was a close one" which i personaly wouldn't class as swearing at all.

I think you get banned if its directed to someone. But if you say it not directed to someone you get money/cargo/guns taken.
I do not know. My Guess

@ Stucuk. Saying Sh*t is the same as swearing. Someone got sanctioned for that. since we all know what the word is

How hard is it not to type in a swear word in the chat box. If you die you dont have to drop the F bomb so everyone in system can hear it.

The Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English sh*t / sh *t / vulgar slang v. ( sh*tting ; past and past part. sh*tted or sh*t or s*at / s* at / ) [ intr. ] expel feces from the body

regardless of how you personally view the word, it is considered universally vulgar & it doesn't really matter if they say it on TV after a certian time. pick a replacement to type in while on the server.

::Edit-
Quote:Thats not a swear word. Its the exact same meaning as "Crap" which is definatly socialy acceptable(See www.dictionary.com for definitions, they both mean the same thing).
I went specifically to dictionary.com... & Stucuk? ... I recomend that you look closer @ the definitions of both. The key distinction is, that according to that specific site 'crap' is considered 'sometimes vulgar' whereas Sh*t is simply considered 'vulgar'. ::
