Hmhmhm....my rp is hopefullyy settled and based in disco lore, the way i rp is heavily coloured by 15+ years of D&D gaming...and what can happen in a SciFi Universe...well, about 30 StarWars books might have helped. Also, i am digging all fantasy books that feature believable evil characters...one of the best features of the Song of Ice and Fire books by the way- everyone gets to be evil and good at the same time
RP inspiration source- my mood. In case, Im up for any RP, I can think about everything...I can remember some stories, which are far from sci-fi. Adapting them, I can make some good and interesting RP, which, hopefully will be enjoable.
Erich Stoltenberg (My BDM|) was a product of characters in movies, tv shows and books including Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, The Americans, Covert Affairs and Gideon's Spies: A history of the Mossad. His story though (The Gambler), is completely a product of my imagination.
Chester Nolan, my merc is an extreme version Chester Bennington (both are musicians and have insane tattoos). I say extreme because this character is also an ex-Navy, ex-adult film star (yes, really, though a very minor star) and a cardamine addict.

There is no sense. Except pleasing you. That's what life and all other things are made for. Well, in reality, they aren't (by my opinion. But who am I to judge?), but use them as they are. Just take care you don't spoil someone else's pleasure. If pleasing others pleases you, it's the best combination.
Pick something you really enjoy doing in Disco then narrow down which area you'd like to be in most, followed by faction and ship. Finally add personality, picture how your character would react to certani situations, would they be calm under threat, would they become aggresive or panic? Try to think like your character, really get into the spirit of roleplay and become that person when you log on.
If you want a really good character I'd suggest starting small, say you want a cruiser captain in the Kusari Navy, start out as a fighter pilot and steadily increase your ship when you feel that character has gained enough experience or done enough to warrant it.
That's how I generally create characters and has churned out one of my favourites, Claude LeVanns (Les.Manoir.Des.Etoiles) who is sadly unplayable at the moment due to the Liberty rephack with the UC. That character is terrified of what he does (smuggling refugees out of Gallia) which makes it a far more human experience and much more enjoyable to play.
I put famous chars to places they don't belong to. It makes them fail so epic. Nothing's so funny like seeing famous people fail.
They have so many photos published, as well. If any of my chars engages in Forum RP-ing, it's easy to show them in many funny moods. Just in case.
"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams rocks. Abso-fckin'-lutely! But some people HERE would rather roll a joint, that get a damn BOOK! Yes, yes - YOU! You know I'm talking about YOU! *pointing on someone who gets blushing now*
As for the stories, they materialise (or don't) as I'm writing them. Most of the time I don't have anything planned when I start, it just develops as I write.
@Croft: your words are reasonable, but what to do when there is no plan? How to play if I don't know what actually to play? How to produce an idea which could be character's background, guidance to follow, main story line?
If considering only in-game actions and interactions, I hardly be able to create my own part of consistent roleplay, all I could is follow someone's roleplay and lore.
It is better to have a bad plan rather than not to have any.
Also I had a thought that to create something, I have to learn on others works, I have to find an inspiration, a spark, that will lead my mind in the new direction further than ones got before me.
Roleplay is writing, and each author became a writer under inspiration of previous writers and their experience.
If this game was abouth mathematics, we would have to study it to reach the highest level and only then create own theories and researches.
Just like whole world works - you have to learn the experience of many of your ancestors to have a foundation for building own thoughts...
They've spent lives of effort to put their experience into the books (mostly), and we are now given an opportunnity to read and learn them...
It took me a bit off the topic, but it helped me to re-assign my thoughts, and understand the importance of experience when it comes to art, in this particular case.
I think of roleplay more as acting than writing, living the character opposed to writing one though both aspects are part of it. In that respect I make my character then make a plan whilst in that frame of mind since to me, making a plan requires an understanding of drive and personality. On the flipside having no plan means you have the freedom to explore all kinds of RP regardless if it's of your design since once you become part of it, it becomes yours or at least that little part does and as long as you enjoy it there's nothing lost.
After all following in others RP can be good, every story needs background characters to flesh it out. If everyone wants to be the centre of attention it becomes hundreds of monologues rather than a living world, something I think lead to this peroid of stagnation.

Good point croft.
Thats why i have a few characters in my RP story. Im also discussing with a few other players about involving them in the story.
