Besides which, where would the Virginians go before discovering that system, even if they were allowed into the system? Would they just be stuck on the ship until a system was assigned to them?

Yes, the red neck culture is real. It is more prevalent the further south you go. Of course ,don't forget the hills and mining towns of West Virginia. (my grandfather was a coal miner there).
Now, the mountain men are of a variety that shuns people for the most part. Living up in the mountains away from what you would call civilization.
