If you do choose to fight for the Order, then that closes down lawful work for you in Liberty. Plus you would have trouble with the Guild elsewhere in Sirius. If you choose to take contracts against the Rheinlanders for the lawful factions in Liberty, the you can't reasonably expect to find unlawful work in Liberty.

In other words, you can't ever be a true neutral mercenary. The first contract you take will shape the path ahead.

I agree, I only used the Order as an example. Another example could be that if we did get a contract with the Order, they might be able to lead us to one with Rheinland, or the Corsairs.
Before making a contract with a faction there are several questions that need to be asked:
What other contracts will this open up for us?
What possibilities disappear once this contract is created?
Are the possible and impossible contracts made with this one worth it for the money the faction is offering?

If the enemy offered a better deal there are also several questions:
What contracts that we currently help will this one help?
What contracts will this one destroy?
What new possibilites are opened with this new contract?
Are these new possibilties and the contracts lost worth the raise in money and the trouble of switching sides?

' Wrote:Plus, attempting to work multiple sides will only get you a bad reputation for unreliability.

I wouldn't say we would work multiple sides. We would make it obvious to our previous client that the enemy has offered us a better deal, and see if they produce a counter-offer. If they don't, then we have switched and we attack them instead.

We won't attack the NPCs as that can effect future deals, however we will shoot at them to make them hostile if we are in an area populated with them.

[17:40:48] Eagle (Junes): Tom should be slapped with a spoon.

Say you take a job working for Bretonia against the Kusari, and are then bought over to the Kusari. You could expect to never work in Bretonia again, ever. And most likely, no one else will trust you.

Kusari would of paid us to work for them fairly, if the Bretonians wanted our services that bad they could offer a counter-offer against Kusari. Were just making a profit in a difficult time, whos to say we can't make a little bit more.

by any chance, is this an attempt at importing Artemis Global Security from that game you mentionned, HAWKX or something?

Yeah, that's unreliability. If you take a job, then leave it, breaking contract, because the pay is better on the other side, nobody will trust you.

Neutrality fails for most mercenary corporations in such a small sector that is Sirius.
Yes single ships can work sides etc but entire corporations aren't.

They rely on their reputation for work and if it is damaged, it can severely hampen any hope they have of being hired anywhere.

You take work in Bretonia, Kusari won't like you.
You take work in Rheinland, Liberty won't like you.

You take work for Outcasts, Corsairs may hate you.

You take work for The Order, BHG and Liberty won't like you.
You take work for Gallia Royalists, Council and Sirius won't like you.
You take work for Gallia Council, Royalists won't like you.

The main point is that no one is desperate enough to hire on people.
Warfare in Freelancer is frankly silly. You can fly through every system of your enemies, encounter plenty of enemies and still get away without a scratch.
It is very easy to go it alone, to put it simply. I have a few too many rogue characters but they all are perfectly safe, simply because it's too easy to avoid fighting sometimes.

In the end, S&D gets most of the work there is nowadays. A new group that plans of working every side will not have a good reputation to start with, let alone after a job or two.
There are just no groups in Sirius who really NEED any help, let alone help they pay for.

Overall, I would say this will not work. Good job on the proposal though.

We would only break contract if the pay was worth losing the trust of people, and it would have to be quite abit for that then.

Very good point, infact I agree with all of it.

I want this to be a good faction for role-play, I don't mind about getting contracts or not, all I want is a faction that can role-play Mercenaries that assist in wars. There would be Mercenary corporations that would offer help in wars if the Sirius Sector was real and it was all real.

But:

Get a contract with Rheinland, the Order will be good aswell,
Get a contract with the Order, the Corsairs may be ok aswell,
Get a contract with the Corsairs, and Gallia may be ok aswell.

Patterns have to be found where at least three or four contracts can be made all over Sirius. I wouldn't want a contract with every single faction, that would be crazy.

And people wouldn't hire us because they would need us, wouldn't Rheinland want some help from PMCs for the role-play benefits? That would be great to see that kind of thing happening, opening up new oppurtunities for Mercenaries everywhere.

Sorry, didn't see this post before.

It's HAWX, and this is kinda like that. Thats why I needed the pictures. I actually thought of this whole idea on the bus home from school, that I didn't see any mercenary factions that got contracts with other factions to assist in things, e.g. escorting large convoys for RepEx, bounty hunting for the Liberty Rogues, assisting Rheinland in the war. For the bpunty hunting part it means that if we got a hunting contract we would focus on their bounties, meaning we would get more of their enemies killed, better for them and us.

Unfortunately there are issues though. You could only work for those people you just said. Every time you take a job, with the possibility of switching sides too, you are cutting off other options for a long time.
