Safe way to trade?

A Shire can destroy a gunboat if the gunboat is poorly piloted. It can hold the average gunboat (without a forward gun) off for long enough to get to safety. I've also managed to send a bomber running on a couple of occasions in my Shire.

I actually go looking for fights in my shire (im a transport PvPwhore), and it is capable of taking on and killing most lone pirates, group pirates though you will have trouble with (though i have fought off 2 sabres and a pirate transport while thrusting 20k to safety).

Why do people keep talking about Shires?

They are out of reach of the average Trader, unless they are in a clan/guild/faction.

I'd like to join a faction, but I've seen the 'requirements' for a few and I'm thinking that I'd have less fun in a faction than I do as a Freelancer, as they mostly seem to add even MORE restrictions as to what you can fly, depending on your rank in the faction.

I'm not saying that I want to fly a BS or an ubertrade transport right away, but I'd like to have the option to be able to do that if I could afford to pay for one myself right off the bat.
