I would suggest you to fly something small, a Gunboat isnt the best you can get, as mentioned, they can be killed by a VHF or a single Bomber...

Nooo,they can't be killed by a VHF,ok,i can tolerate bomber(my GB got killed by a bomber when i was new here,and i killed GB with bomber),but not VHF,unless that Gunboat pilot is REAL n00b!

As you guys said,the best ship for new players would be Fighter/Bomber,That's how i got killed in my GB a lot of times when i bought it

if a vhf pilot fly's well enough they can deplete the shields just fine. but yeah.. you wont see a vhf solo a gunboat in a decent amount of time, any day of the week.

but yeah.. if you want to feel superior to people without having to work at it, get a gunboat and practice that for a while. however you can still be picked apart by teams of two and solo'd by a good bomber.

It takes a long time, and a good pilot, but yes, VHFs can kill Gunboats. though it usually works better with 2 rather than 1, but it can, and has been done. In fact, a Werewolf with an Inferno can quite easily solo gunboats.

Personally, I'd go for a Manta. Fighters are enjoyable to fly and the BH one looks cool. Dunno about handling and that. It has a respectable powercore, though.

Key note - PLEASE make sure that you have the BHG ID before you go to buy this ship. Otherwise it becomes very expensive for you when the Core system guard units make you sell it or blow you up multiple times. And you CANNOT fly ANY gunboat with a recruit ID.
The Bottlenose is designed now as, effectively, a VERY large bomber. The Orca is a cap support ship and/or gunboat attacker. They have two different roles and missions, and for survivability, a decent armor is required.

Buy a tridente if you want but you better spend a week in Eta mission grinding learning how to fight with that thing. And for god's sake don't get into any skirmish without having at least a Cap VI

Great loadout for it 6 OC guns and two missiles (Depending on what your gong to do have the missiles either on the rear slots or on the top ones)

Now get a buddy with a Sabre with All Krakens and an Inferno. You'll take on most small squads of bombers and fighter swarms with success. It just takes practice.

Edit: If you know your going to get killed or have a slim chance of winning. Sub-Target SNAC's and Mini Razors and chain fire Missile, RCD, Missile.
