This could be done really easy. Just add change the currnet forward based hard-points and limit their rotation.
I think it can be done even without changing the model,it is only slight hard-point change.
The major problem will be how to balance the whole deal. And I agree with the OP that some high damage forward only cannons would be fun.On the other side there are limitations.
Like how often you can shoot them to make them worth energy-wise and how much damage they shall bring.
Think heavy motar here. It does really huge damage to unarmoured battleships and relative nothing to armoured one.There are a lot of limitations connected with the capital ships.
About cruisers I do agree. They are kind of useless class right now, only the Ku dessie is exception.
All cruisers have no chance against 2 bombers. The most have no chance against other vessels,the same with the battle-cruisers.

The biggest issue here is that just about every idea always looks great when you just write about it. Cause then there are no exploits visible at once, no issues with specific situations/ships/locations no people arguing that their prefer class/ship or faction is at a disadvantage or anything like that. Once you actually start implementing something and then throw it to the wolves (200 players all seeking to gain any pvp advantage possible) that's where the problems start.
There are no "simple" solutions, any idea needs many changes along the way to actually work and quite often you find out it doesn't really work that well. That's why disco so far is following the concept of (relatively) small changes happening rather than trying to change whole concept with radical changes. This is also because it should be possible for the player base to keep following the changes.
Anyway some of these ideas are already implemented or thought about before. Quite many changes that you don't take into account are also happening.

Not entirely truth, first the stats that you mention are wrong and even if they weren't those all are subject to change during 4.86 beta testing as well as trough 4.86 updates.
As it looks now that the diversity should come mostly from mounting different heavy weapons, which then makes you use completely different tactics, we'll see how it goes.
b) novas/bs missiles/cruiser missiles will work vs shields c) flaks as point defenses should shoot down novas d) turret view steering makes flying cruisers and gbs completely different
+ there are some other small but noticeable changes to capships as well as bombers
Together these will rather radically change capship fights and will certainly need quite a few changes to work or not work sufficiently.

Ive played another mod in wich the BS fights took realy long... and their were nuclear rockets(slow but devastation explosionradius about 3 to 5k) and fighter combat was realy hard i mean even with AU you were down in about 20sec (bots and bats werent used well you didnt have the chance)
i wont tell the name of the Mod due i dont want to get baned or do marketing for em.
