I havent noticed it get to 190 for many months now after an explosion shortly after release + series of early updates.

Perhaps if incremental additions were done instead of HUGE updates (are they gonna do this or not, they said they would do increments instead of huge jumps like usual)

there'd be less turnover.

Has been a while since the last update to 4.86...

That would probably bring some back, at least for a while.

I still find it interesting, lucky you guys =P

The stations, cloaks, jumps, etc have made it even better...

Perhaps more varied shipclasses would allow for more variety and more people.

Currently, there are, in order of increasing size...

Light/Heavy/Very Heavy/Super Heavy Fighters...

Bombers

Gunboats and Gunships, not different in form but in purpose

Destroyers/Cruisers, same thing, just different name.

Battlecruisers

Battleships/Carriers

What we need is more variety to those shipclasses, like the way battlecruisers is between battleships and cruisers

Something inbetween Gunboats and Cruisers, for example, would be interesting.

Something inbetween SHF's and Gunboats would also be interesting, seen done in other mods, the class is called Corvettes, and I visualize them as having a few GB turrets mixed with lvl 9/10 fighter guns.

More customization I think would help bring people back...

Currently, lights, guns, equipment, armor. That's about all you can customize about a ship.

Other mods have custom powergens, shield regens/capacity...

Yes, it would take time to balance, but the time put in would bring great new tactics and therefore, (hopefully) more people as well...

Instead of complaining about how bad it is, (not speaking about anyone directly here)

Think of ways to improve it.

Well your classing for cruiser/dassies is false...there are Light destroyers(kusary and i think this one is alone in its class) and meadium to heavy ones(corvo/storta/ai cruiser - as to my knowledge there is no heavy dasies because that a light cruiser) some ships are refered ingame as cruisers but theyr not...a destroyer is very agille while a cruiser in its true meaning is a bombarding platform that lacks agility but has enaugh firepower and armor to compensate that and the battlecruisers are a more heavier version of the heavy cruisers

Also, this mod is still listed as a beta-version. Ppl may think, a beta is bugged.

Player count will raise again, when the final version releases. If not, you can only try to welcome new players and help them a bit with infos, so that they stay a bit. Newbies are the fresh blood, and there are many of them, each day.

This game is -old-. Sooner or later, of course it will be dead. But I hope, it will take a long time until then.

It will never be DEAD becaus there is nothing outthere even similar to freelancer....was in 2004 (release date) that game called Online Universe developed by Egosoft(ones who made the X series of singleplayer space simulator - and the best space simulator to date) but integrating the x universe in multiplayer is a mamoth task...for you who have playd it imaggine SETA used on a multi server and because of that the release date that was 2004 has been extended to an unknown date i dont even know if the canceled it or not.Freelancer will liveon and will do so for many years because is the only third person multyplayer space shooter that is worth to play and if we manage to get our hands on the source code....imagine.

Perhaps one day, we will gain someone smart enough to reverse engineer it and get the source code somehow...

Sigh.

Obviously, the same could be said of battleships. There are light ones, (Osiris, Libby Dread, others), Medium ones (Bretonia BS, Aqulion, others) and Heavy ones (Liberty Carrier, KUBS, RMBS, others)

They're for the same general purpose however.

Cruisers are for kiting BS's (although how well certain ones do this compared to others is subjective) and supporting the offensive.

Battleships are for clobbering other battleships and smaller capital ships.

I mean a different shipclass for a different purpose.

I think a Corvette would be anti bomber, similar to both fighter's roles and gunbaots roles.

The main problem of Discovery not having enough players is not because Freelancer's an old game or Discovery's getting bad.

Personally, it's because nobody friggin' knows what "Freelancer" is. I mean seriously, ask any gamer around you about the space-sim-arcade-shooter called "Freelancer" and chances are, he'll go "Wut?".

We are unlike more famous games such as MuOnline, Maple Story, Eve. We're a closed system. They publicize their game a lot, their clients are free for download. We require the original Freelancer which nobody knows about anyway due to lack of publicity.

That's the reason why we're few in numbers.

I personally think Freelancer is one of the more enjoyable and immersive online RPGs I've played. It isn't simply about level grinding or getting cash. For this game, there's the RP element, the main highlight of the server. If Freelancer could just get more publicity, I believe that our playerbase can be comparable to big-time MMORPGs out there.

There are plenty of people in Gamma. None of them are corsairs however....
Too little RP, too much PvP maybe?
There are better games out there that do this.
The one thing that made the Disco RP24/7 server unique is slowly being deconstructed. 'Freelancer' was free in name only. It came with a small string of rules that made everyones life easy to play with.
So many people enjoyed it that the server was always packed and grew constantly as the server slots increased.
Now, with a more freeform game, the rules become less strict in some ways but more complicated in others, hence the term 'sanctionlancer' gets used often here now.
The structures under which we played gave the game direction but now with less structure comes less direction and more randomness.
Balance has been slewed in favor of the few and even when it is pointed out by numerous respected players on the server, they are dismissed by the very people responsible for that inbalance. Most have all but given up.
Now, people seem to be judged on how good they are as combat pilots rather than as players.
It just basicly means that it's changed here from yester-year.
For better or worse?

I'll let you be the judge of that.

Blubba you have a point there but the truth is different.Myself i dont like ganks and wars because that allways lead to something nasty...i like a few handfull of people to play with and that was easy in the past but now its very hard to find those who would follow you and show respect to other players instead i find lots of "gun crazy" that would prefer shoting NOW and search the debries after and those usualy fall first in any combat.I had a very vast experience with people that showed at my doorstep and started shoting the second i undocked or the second i was in range of theyr ships and i allways greet even enemyes with open arms and with peace. To many new players to many young ones and i mean underaged that cannot cope with the fact that disco is RP first Fight after and they lack any basic imagination that restricts them to fighting and metagaming. They look for the biggest best ship/guns...everithing money can buy but they lack the skill to use it properly and when they find themself overwhelmed they start flaming and they quit. The love has gone now the disco is guided by (i quote someone) "gang or be ganked" line.

those that complain - and those that do not...

... firstly - ask yourself:

"what have you done in the past that might have upset other players? - what have other players done to upset you"

if the server and the community is about roleplay before anything else - how often have you said or agreed, or silently overlooked people saying or acting that pvp is the way to go. - how much is the so called "pvp skill" praised over the skills of tolerance, respect before other players needs and wishes - and most and foremost ... the expected lore of a faction.

oberving the past - lets say 2-3 years... there has been a tendency "to do things, cause it was not forbidden" - and when it became forbidden - to complain about "freedom of choice". - players play what they can, but refuse to play what they must. THAT is what causes imbalances.

in the past, i have asked for game masters multiple times - but to be honest ... a game master is just someone acting as a moderator, it is the players that need to abide by certain guidelines.

- as long as people pvp "cause they can"
- as long as people put their own wellfare before other players
- as long as decisions are made unilaterally instead of multilaterally

the RP enviroment cannot really grow or regrow. - people must realize that there is power in weaknesses as there is in strengths, people must realize that pvp is not the end of all things - and they must accept diplomatic defeats.

the game is not about accumulating things more and more, systems, credits, community power. - it is also about letting others keep or have their share. - unless those things are realized ... how can a healthy and fair RP enviroment happen.

the main motivation to play discovery freelancer is : roleplay

reflect upon the role you chose to play, reflect upon the lore layed on that role, - don t try too hard to break out of the NPC factions limitations ... self restraint is the key. - and maybe then .. one can enjoy the community much more again. - roleplay, serious roleplay is an aspect NONE of those other games offer. nither EVE, nor any other - they are all about pvp and/or accumulating power in a virtual world.

about 4.86 in specific:

there is a trend ....

- simple things are lost
- complex and complicated things replace them

it is like increasing the difficulty level. - but ignoring the fact that some people actually LIKE playing on easy or casual difficulty.

here is a chain of things that happened - as a rough idea since 4.82 ( that come to my mind spontanously )

- BHG and bounty hunting became "work" - little incentive of being a casual and independent hunter for the spontanous and situational contract - which brought quite a lot of interaction
- diplomacies have become demands "if you don t give us, we pvp you to death"
- making money has grown from "take commodity X from A to B and commodity Y from B to A" ... to a circular trade route, processing of special goods etc. - and also ... with more and more complex "RP / house laws" trade has become more complicated if conducted lawful - promoting the silent trader who ignores most of those things in order to make some credits
- enemies have become more complex - who fights who? in vanilla - its really mostly lawfuls vs. unlawfuls - but i do wonder if there are many players who know exactly which faction currently fights what other faction and for what reasons.
- the size of sirius has grown to enormous proportions - leading to spreading the population thin ... but also creating spots where its not easy to determine who governs what.

there is certainly more - some of it is good, some of it bad. - all in all, disco is a lot more complex than vanilla, and the players ( us, the community ) asks for more and more complex measures - while at the same time realizing that it may not always be for the good.

Also, this game is getting old. and people getting old. they growing up and leaving game. some people joins, but they barelly can be so good as most of old people. and new generation of players dont like to play that old game. they all playing other game with better engines and colours. but as far as I see - Disco still alive.

школоте не понять

A point as well - generation is changing, so in future there would be no young players income. Its a game of our time, and everything good will remain in its own time period.
