The Destroyer was far out of firing range. I'm not stupid.
A trader does not sidle up to an enemy destroyer and go "nah nah you cant
hit me because of the server rules."
Here was the situation.
A battlegroup of Outcasts was in New York hanging just off the entrance to
Colorado TradeLane. There was two LPI pilots that the OC were focused
on. I came through from Colorado. Got to the end and noticed firing
around me. I had come out in the middle of a firefight. Unlucky me.
I zipped away to a safe distance and started calling in any lawfuls in NY.
While i was in a safe distance I thought this would be a good time to watch, seeing as the life of a miner/trader is pretty boring sometiume and I had never seen so many OC all at once. The LPI was lasting a long time also, so Kudos to them. There were about 8 OC fighters and 1 Destroyer. It was an OC battlegroup and by the looks of it it had been planned.
Then in amongst all this a pirate came up to me and demanded 500k. As I had only just got 1Mil i thought this was a bit steep, and I was outraged that the pirate would stoop so low as to put a gun in someones back and demand half of my entire savings.
He said "MyTradername, 500k or die" I didnt think before i replied "Get lost blankedoutname". He chased after me and I died.
I died fair and square. The destroyer was still nowhere near in range. He was not blocking my escape, in fact i dont think he even noticed me. I swore to myself and logged off.
Lessons learned from this.
1) Dont hang around watching a fight when you have a load of silver.
2) When a pirate comes for you, either haggle or run.
I dont want ANYONE sanctioned for this because nothing went wrong. No one broke the server rules, the pirate did well to get me at that time, the destroyer wasnt anywhere near us, and it was fun all round.
Now I'm saddened that I have to jump in here and write this, because people are jumping up and down yelling "SANCTION SANCTION BAN BAN!!"
Please. It's just a game for crying out loud.

OK this is why a detroyer cannot be anywhere near the pirate while pirating.
Say the trader had a pair of fighter's as escort. Now the pirate demand's money, and the escort goe's after the pirate. The cruiser can always say i did not help the pirate because i did not shoot at the trader. I only engaged the fighter's. WELL that would be helping/being part of the pirating.
Look in sanction's. Not sure how far back you need to go, but there have been cap's sanctioned for being with pirate's/grouped to pirate's in the past.
I am not saying in this incident the desi did anything wrong, but you can see where the temptation for the desi to jump in and help, or be a fear factor in the pirating.
DO not take me wrong. i do not want to see anyone sanctioned. Was just making some point's.

You are too much Akumabito ...:laugh:... Dab, Adamantine Fist and I were talking about NPC ships/bases that are built into the game ... not player characters.
Go ahead Akumabito ... lets ban these NPCs and their bases. :rtfm:

Um ... did you not read what I wrote? The destroyer in this incident is protecting the pirate gunboat. That is LEGAL and GOOD.
I've been pirating in my gunboat and came across a trader who hired a bounty hunter flying a battle cruiser as an escort. Woulda been nice to have a destroyer fight the battle cruiser so I could concentrate on the act of piracy.
I swear ... you traders will look for ANY loophole you can find to avoid being pirated. Its getting a bit old man.
I bet if you read those sanctions you are referring to you'll find that the destroyer or cruiser was actually doing the pirating. That's a no-no. But defending the pirate from bombers, battle cruisers, whatever type escort or help the trader hires to defend his cargo is a legal target for the destroyer.
Look at it this way ... if a trader can hire escorts that can destroy a pirate ... logic dictates that the pirate can hire a merc or whatever to take out your escort and give the pirate a shot at the trader.
Baltar, its no use.. Trust me, there are soooo many OORP traders (many doing an OORP route through Chugoku, the BD's home system that few are supposed to even know the location of...) that will do ANYTHING to avoid being pirated. That means F1ing, threatening with a ban because I'm pirating that person.. Docking Ainu Depot, a GC base, while a GC-tagged ship is pirating them.. And the best; Bringing out their battlecruisers and battleships to get vengeance on the small little lone VHF/Bomber (depends on my mood) that took out their transport. Of course, then they run when that lone little VHF/Bomber turns into a group of pirates out for his blood... THAT feels good, unlike dealing with these people..
And then we have the grand finale. The trader who dies, comes back with his destroyer, sits out Ainu Depot, and demands 5 million FROM THE PIRATE or he'll kill him. He ran too, when I took him to the GC guard.. Then again when my backup arrived in Hokkaido.. Then he repaired on Planet Kyshu, and came again.. Then we tricked him into making an unauthorized, non-docking ring landing on Planet Kyushu. But losing one destroyer wasn't enough. He brought out his 'spare' and came again!
But no! The PIRATE sure lost that fight..
This is an example of my day as a Kusari pirate in the middle of the OORP shortcut to the Diamond-Niobium route.. Trust me.. There are few traders out there that don't look for any, and I mean ANY way to avoid piracy.. And what makes it much worse, as now all the pirates expect bad attitudes and OORP from the traders, that the legit RPing traders get caught up in the bad name of a trader.
Now excuse me while I report Battleship Mississippi for 'interfering' when I got caught smuggling.
I should take a screenshot of this entire thread.
Its just full of rule lawyering.
Maybe I can get the lot of you banned from the forums?
<end of sarcasm>

I do hope it's not against the rules to have a cruiser sitting 14k away from the tradelane ready to fight anything that comes along hunting for a fighter to kill, because that's what the Rogues do. Grouped and so far away they couldn't be construed as part of the piracy, but they will come to the aid of the pirate if something bigger than a fighter or bomber is providing escort or turns up to ruin the party. It's our little defence against the recent bother we've been having regarding battlecruisers. Fighters are expected to pirate, fine, cruisers are not allowed to open fire on a trader or commit an act of piracy, equally fine. Where does it say that a cruiser cannot kick the living daylights out of a gunboat flying trader escort? Or a cruiser that turns up to balst ickle pirates out of the sky. Pirtaes should be something to fear not just a minor irritation.
Saint Del is considered a holy healer of diseases of children, but also as a protector of cattle.
If I have a dessi with me on a raid, I ussually shoo him off a few K so I can pirate.
Now as far as helping out when the flood arrives, it is free to open up. To have a Dessi close by (a couple K) isn't against the rules, only if it attacks. I would also think it is deffinatly not OORP for a trader to get a cold sweat with one sitting silently nearby.
When with other raiders in Varyag, I ussually sit about 7k out from the ambush just to be on the safe side.
