Its a severe situation.... Earthquake, Tsunami and now a Reactor explosion, not to mention a giant whirlpool. The footage Ive seen seems like something out of a disaster movie, I keep wondering when Godzilla is gonna pop out of the middle off all of it all.
The real danger now seems to be the Reactors. They shut down automatically as a safety measure when the earthquake hit. At that point emergency generators are supposed to keep pumps pumping coolant to the reactor core. They did till the Wave hit. The Tsunami knocked out the emergency generators and all the physical power lines to and from the station. This has been the big complication. If they cannot keep the core cooled down it will melt. (Think Three Mile Island or Chernobyl, The US navy delivered coolant to them yesterday Per Sec. Clinton and that shows how bad it has to be.) They are running the pumps on Batteries and Generators flown in by Helicopter, since the physical power grid no longer exist they cant send power from somewhere else. They released steam this morning (sounds like a last ditch effort) to keep the core temperature down, and then the Outer shell of 1 of the 4 reactors that are on that site blew its roof and walls, the inner core they say was not affected, and they are now saying that they are going to cool it down with Sea Water. (A very last ditch effort, as the facilities will be rendered useless, but it is a 40 year old plant).
What I am impressed with, is how well, that they are reacting to it as a Government and a Population. All of the training and preparation and strict construction codes has paid off in saving lives.
Out off everything that is befallen them in the last 72 hours, the Reactor crisis is the worst of it. Its a long term problem.
