As Jinx points out the encounter should be based Role play for both the characters and the situation.
When Ive been stopped! I quickly work out the net value of any goods [cost of replacement], the cost of replacing nanites, batteries, and counter measures, then add 10k for each JG Ive past through.
I also consider the type of cargo; If Im carrying passengers, VIPs, or even prisoners that Id pay whatever is demanded or try barter safe passage by releasing some prisoners, or passing VIPs / passengers into slavery.
I never calculate the possibility of been killed into any activity, and why should I feel the need? What with the huge advancement and development gene sequencing and DNA splicing since arriving here in Sirius, means that death has simple become another illness quickly cured. All standard injury / life insurance policy cover the cost for DNA re-sequencing, as long as youve handed in a DNA sample at medical centre at the last station you visited, there shouldnt be a real problem.
But it gets rather silly when youre stopped moving toxic waste and pirate demands a mere 5m.
Ive paid out 8m once when moving VIPs, but the piracy situation was RP well and pay out was inline with the encounter.
Id really wish pirates would look upon piracy as an RP event, and not as a fast track to their very own BS.
There shouldnt anything like taxing; Pirating should be based on the goods presently been carried, if trader wants pay a bounty to keep their goods then fine. However this want solve the problem of ever increasing numbers of OORP pirates presently infesting the server, I mean why should they spend hours searching out trade routes, when other OORP pirates are willing just throw them a few million so they can go off and buy themselves Corsair Titan, and then arm the craft with Outcast weaponry.
I'm guessing somebody *looks up* just had a bad experiance with pirates.
A) you don't pay just the cost of replacement, you lose what you could have sold your cargo for. I.E. You buy 4000 units of Metal at place A for 1,000,000 credits. You can sell these units of Metal at place B for 6,000,000 credits. You don't lose 1,000,000 you lose 6,000,000.
b) If your ship blows up you die. Game over, sorry, no restarts. RP that and then I'll respect a call for lower pirating demands.
C) Pirating is in no way shape or form a "fast track to their very own BS". If I pirated EVERY trader I saw for 2,000,000 credits and they all paid (never gonna happen) it would take me about 1000 pirating interactions to get a fully outfitted BS. Say I met 10 traders per day who paid, that would still be 100 days of pirating, and that's STILL not including all I have to pay for repairs/TrainCDs.
Edit: YAY!!! I'm a Sabre pilot!!! Sabres rock your socks off!!
I think a pirate should be able to ask for any amount. (this coming from a trader who as been pirated several times) It's up to the trader to comply or die hell a pirate could lie and ask for 20mil and say he and his "friends" won't ever bother them again. If you're naive enough to believe that's your fault.
If you look at any criminals they steal things, they don't go upto a Lorry driver and go "Give me 2 million or ill kill you", especialy how the guy wouldn't have 2 million on him as he is just a driver for a larger company. Pirates technicaly shouldn't ever ask for a tax unless your passing through there system, insted they should be asking for your cargo, if there going for propper RP anyway.
Taxing is just a "Get Money Faster" tactic. Before my previous accounts got wiped i had an outcast, and other outcasts helped me to raise enough cash to get a bomber by "asking for donations" from traders. It has nothing to do with RP, just to get some extra cash fast without doing anything. Asking for cargo would be in RP but no pirate i have ever seen has even given that option (Iv even jetisoned my cargo during cruise and the pirate just ignored it).
Well, for one, a weapons dealer should NEVER move anywhere without an escort, and he should never let anyone know when, where, or how he's getting to his destination.
As for anything 2m or over being either A or B, I disagree - for reasons stated ni my previous posts.
My trader was actually stopped the other day and the demand was for 10 units of the engine components i was carrying. I RP'd a bit grouching about the loss and the pirate RP'd that he would have demanded cash but that some of his buddies needed the components to fix up their ships. I dropped the components and had some fun with the RP. That had to be one of the best stops made on me to date. Kudos to that guy (wish i had taken time to get his name). I wish more would be a little more original like that.
Its oorp to ask for money when "raiding". Everyone does but it goes against proper RP.
1. If priates/criminals had your bank details they would wipe them out compleatly.
2. Most traders don't own there ship, they belong to a larger company (i.e Like lorry drivers) so they would never have 2 million on them as they wouldn't even get payed that
3. Even if they owned there own ship they wouldn't carry around a "bank card" with them that had millions on it. (They would most likley setup the deals via secure channels from a planet where there base of operations is, not from a ship)
Asking for money is just a way for people to get extra cash, it has nothing to do with RPing. When there is no RP behind it, its pritty much PVP.
