Shall I...?

I shall!

First I'd like to thank you all for you amused tolerance of our little Bandaloop group.

Your continued support has now made us officially richer than the Pope.

As pointed out, the TAZ and its earlier incarnations came mostly from without.. from some brilliant if crazed not-for-Profits and Novelists.

But as a practicing Discordian for over 30 years, I can attest that it comes from within as well.

So, Drake, where do you draw the line? A fun little book from two wastrels in Walnut Creek now has millions of real, actual adherents.

I hesitate to call them Disciples, as we are all probably rather undisciplined.

Some religions have sprung from humbler beginnings.

We haven't even begun to fill your heads with Moorish Orthodox theology.

Hakim is biding his time.

Well, as I pointed out earlier, most people consider Discordianism to be a joke (and most probably have no idea it even exists)... And the real Discordians tend to be rather tolerant and good-humored... So few people are going to get terribly offended over the TAZ. But if someone started up a neo-Islamic pirate faction, or a neo-Catholic Inquisition? Not good, not good at all.

If you really think about it, almost all wars were caused by "religion". So the leaders of these groups who know it's not real, make the people who think it's real do there bidding....

I wanted to address this. Wars have been fought over things like salt, and women. Don't scapegoat on religion, for humanity's nature.

See? this is why bringing up religion is rarely a good idea. Everyone agrees that religion of some sort can play a part of RP. Not that it necessarily should, but that it can. Where the problems start is when one person says their opinion, and others take it personally.

Let's just try and keep our cool and discuss this without snapping at each other's opinions, ok? Remember that everyone sees the world in their own way, and that your vision of reality doesn't necessarily match up with someone else's vision of reality. That doesn't make either you or them right or wrong.

Now that I've said that, I must also say this. I see no real reason why any and all mention of real-world religions should be removed altogether. I do agree that they should take a background role, rather than as the base for more serious RP, but why shouldn't I spice up a character by saying that they're Jewish, or Catholic or something? Heck, what's to say that I couldn't build a character for a terrorist ID that goes out and makes as many messes as he can, believing that he's doing (insert your religion's devil here) work? I don't plan to do it, but there's RP possibilities there.

Anyway, that's my 5 credits.

Don't see any problem with the first part, making a character who is a member of <religion>. But when you make the character a zealot, or a terrorist, or an evangelical proselytizer, and you're using a real religion or one obviously based on a real religion, then you start running the risk of really offending people (usually a member of the religion you're using). It doesn't matter if you are also really a member of that religion, you'll still end up offending people.

It was just a rather extreme example that I threw out there off the top of my head, just to illustrate the RP potential of such a character. The possibility of offending people is why I don't plan on making such a character. There's RP possibilities, but some people are more easily offended than I am.

Well, you said it:

You can't have a major religon on the server because it promotes fanaticisim...If you allow jewish, you have to allow the jewish spin-off religion. once you allow christians you have to allow the christian spin offs...onnce you have all 3 major religons represented on the server, RP will go out the winow in lieu of religious bias, & as drake elluded to, you will have people fighting based on who has the bigger 'god' bulge in their cockpit. & assuming that people can remain mature about it is nothing but wishful thinking...even from the adults.

At least with discordianisim they don't go overboard w/ taking themselves as seriously as the big 3 do

My problem is a widespread lack of collective, and personal, responsibility.

It's always someone else's fault. Most recently it's either bush or religion. Scapegoating irritates me- you can't grow as a person when you're doing that.

I have to say I'm against characters being deeply, or openly, religious to others. If someone decided they would make a JW, and from their understanding, run around Sirius "bugging" people, I would be little miffed. Simply because they don't know the whole story, every aspect of why we do what we do, etc.

But to add it in their bio or somewhat, I see nothing wrong with that, as long as you're discreet enough.
