Every name you think of somone else will most likely have used, I mean I get 2,080 results for "Kiggles" in google and that is a rather random name.
And I have had a few times where I have to vary my name because "Kiggles" is taken (sometimes I took it myself and forgot my password so had to make a new account:$)

Well I googled mine, got about 1350 results or so. As far as I can tell I'm the only English Speaking person to ever use it, because all of the ones I can read are me. It's also apparently an Arabic/Turkish/i've no idea name along with Korean.
I'm suprised this thread is still growing...so, I'll do my part:
"Damien" is one of my character names that I came up with 6 months ago.
about a week or two ago, I started to notice another "Damien" flying on the server.
One thing I share w/ all my characters, is the knowlege that I am not the center of the Universe...not even the fictional one I play in.
"Damien" is not a very common name where I'm from, but it is the name from a famous film.
...Anyway, I pm'ed the guy, & I think he's pretty cool.
IMHO, the person who's name offends you by virtue of the similarity, is no more trying to "step on your toes" as John Smith would to another John Smith.

Anyone who throws a real-life example into the works is missing the point entirely.
This is not real life, its a game, in which usernames are essential to prevent confusion between characters.
Confusion between characters can lead to characters and reputations getting damaged. Suddenly my game-time (already filled with random noobs asking me in PM where the bathroom is) gets further packed with PMs from people saying "are you Jose_Carlos lol?"
It wouldnt be nearly so much of an irritant if one player in question (Jose_Carlos) was not now a bomber-flying Corsair with an RP style remarkably similar to my own....
If similarities in a name are that much of a problem to anyone then why dont you get a Name Change Certificate ? thats what they are for arent they ?
If you feel that you/who ever dont want to change your name then you/whoever can kindly(& i mean kindly) pm the offending person & offer to buy him a NCC to solve the problem in a mature & neutral manner.
Choosing a name has infinate possibilities...
ok, i haven t read all the threat - but i guess if you PM each other about the issue you might both come to a solution, unless it turns out that its something out-of-character or so... in the end, its not too hard to make a new char ( as long as you re not flying a battleship ) or request a namechange to something more unique.
maybe you can convince that player that its very much confusing and damages your roleplay - anyway, talking to each other is the best way to solve most of those issues. if it turns out that he has chosen the name to make fun of your character and that its personal - then it would be harassment and can be dealt with.
as for in game only man who used same nick as me is Hyperion....i used that nick long time ago for my main BSG char...but luckily we didn't use it in the same time
but in game....my chars are named rather unique...
